A couple weeks ago I set a trap in a clients garden after a rain in soft soil. I was looking for a place to set a second trap when I saw a mole pushing up the soil. I pulled out my shovel and dug a shovel full behind him. I started to dig up to the mole when it backed up in the tunnel showing me it's hind end. I grabbed it by the fur and flung it on the lawn where I captured a live mole.

I saw more mole sign later that day so I went out first thing in the morning to set six more traps. Did a trap check early afternoon and found that no traps were set off but saw a second mole pushing up earth. I didn't have a shovel handy so I grabbed the leg of a wood burning stove that was laying around and dug behind this one. Grabbed it by the fur and put it in my bucket alive.

These were both young moles that are sometimes a challenge to trap in soft dirt especially when they have made a feeding area out of the whole garden. So I guess I added "live catching" to my skills.

I've had that happen. If you're on fresh sign, it isn't as hard as one would think....although, I never express that to the homeowner.... smile

I am up to 5 moles on a half acre lot. 4 of the 5 were taken from the same trap in the same run as the moles were exiting from under the A/C unit concrete slab. The last 2 their wasnt even anymore mole sign, I just left that trap set to see what would happen and I ended up with two more well after I would of called the job done.

ok, I need some quick pointers. or somebody needs to send me to somewhere thats a good reference- a "how to trap moles" site or book or something.

I usually set my traps against sidewalks and driveways, as they are using them and I have seen that on here. I dont set traps in feeder tunnels, I only try to use the good strait ones.

But, I dont know anything about the "denning" and what about the tunnels against foundations that are so deep you cant see? Do you guys just probe around there and look even though you just have a hunch there might be one there.

Also, how many traps do you set on a job. Do you ever go to a small yard and just set 1 trap? I'm talking like 1000 sq ft yards. I use out o sights.

please help me guys, I'm trying to expand and I'm kinda loosing my butt on moles.

ok i'll chime in... you didn't say if you are catching any thing. at all... ??? trapping for awhile and still seeing new damage? caught some moles and now getting fired traps? Might look into short tailed shrews. OOS traps will NOT catch them. try steves traps, No-Mols, or snap traps. Welcome to the school of Hard-Knox:))

For starters if you want some good reference materials books videos ect check out the top of this page WCS sponsors it. They have lots of good reference materials on trapping moles. But you still have to get out there and apply it. Also try a search on this site for mole trapping. You should find some good stuff there. Tom Schmitt the mole man has a very good video. just a place to start if you want. You did not say if you are catching anything at all. Snaped traps or what? Are moles going under the trap and not setting it off? I usually catch all my moles in one or two main tunnels in the yard. You can tell the main tunnels at a glance when you get the hang of it. If you have any mouns of dirt you can bet you have a main tunnel there. Moisture content it the soil plays a big part in what the moles will do. They will follow the moisture to the food source. If it has been very dry the moles will be deeper in the ground. Traps set per yard will vary with the size but I will always set at least 6-8 traps even in very small yard. The big yards 1 to 2 acres may get 20 to 30 traps depending on the sign. The more traps you set the better chance you have of catching the moles faster.

Best regards
Troy

basically, im not catching them. No set off traps. Im just a crapper mole killer I think.
I think for one, I need to use more traps per yard. But I also just dont have a real understanding of moles, say like compared to deer hunting or something like that. I mean with deer I see the patterns, I know how time of year affects them etc. with moles Im just kinda in the dark. If there is a tunnel I set a trap. thats about it.

Yeah just like any animal you have to have as much knowledge as possible about its habits and habitat. This very thread alone has tons of great info. Just keep trying and once you catch a few hundred you will start to get the hang of it.

you will be successful because you are not afraid to ask questions, buy reference material, and from your post you are applying what you learn. That's it. Ask, Study, Apply, Repeat.
I actually rode along with a mole trapper for a get me up to speed quick kind of thing. Keep trying and good luck

Ok you are not catching them. You are a deer hunter, and understand funnel areas. Imagine that under a big ol' tree is their denning area (lots of damage) and out in the yard is their feeding area (lots of damage) NOW... the tunnels that connect these two areas are the funnel area ( the main tunnels). if there are several of these long tunnels then set them all up the more traps the better if you are in the bus. get em and get out. later Tim
