It was, I think, Big Al from New York who defined the first week of August as " H " week.... because of all the bat calls you get at all hours of the night, when the young bats are beginning to leave the roost for the first time. You guys getting a good percentage of bat calls yet? (Got 3 in the last 2 days...)
They're getting batty in Cincinnati...Always did most biggest jobs down there....Something about those old river towns.
LT you are right and a friend of mine told me Al in New York is so busy with bat calls he has been helping him handle other critter calls. H week sounds like money week to me!!

It has been a fun 2 week's. I took a couple early last night, before 11 pm. and then tried to get some rest. We got 3 more call's in the next couple hours, and sent them to a friendly competitor, that kept him running till daylight. In all the year's we have been doing bat work, very rarely did I come across anything but Little Brown's. These are the single bat call's in homes at night. This year, out of over 30 call's that I took, every bat has been a Big Brown. We started getting call's 2 weeks ago, in the middle of July, which has never happened before. We may have gotten a call or two the last week in July, but they were always Little Browns. We are curious what August will be like, with the White Nose Syndrome going through the Little Brown populations. Any day now,in a normal year, the pup's would be starting to come into the picture as they leave the roost's. It will be interesting to see what happen's.

an exclusion all depends on the house....how high...do you need a lift, how much sealing...there is not a one price fits all. you should look at the house and price it according to the number of hours it will take, two three visits and the guarantee
an emergency call is just that an emergency call. I am NOT getting out of bed at 11 or 12 at night for $150 lets just say that ...

how often do your customers say we just want the bats out don't want to do the cleanout evan after the risks are explianed?
Not often, most folks I run into want the smell and staining gone more than they want the bats gone. LOL Besides my customers rarely get the option as my prices usually include the cleanout as a toal package price.

Yes Buck..........The house is netted,,,or was in the process..... This allows the bats to leave and you to "reserve" the job, for completion at a later date.......(Expensive ... but factored out it is a good investment)......

Lady called yesterday. She runs a small swanky restaurant from an older home. She found two bats inside the service area and had found a few others recently. The Health Department pulled her license. So she is closed for a while. Do you think that she may have a bat colony in the building?
She rents the premises, so I think there is more to to the story than I have been told.
I still have about 15 on back order. I guess that puts her in position #16. That shouldn't be too much of a problem. The building needs a whole heap of repairs before I will even make a proposal. It has been a very busy bat season here too!

Some will wait for what they want, But this is much more slicker, WORK REAL HARD for what you want, and you will get it much more QUICKER ...
Juvi bat in the house call last night. No sign of a colony, and they left a window open in the sons room with no screen. In this town nobody can pay anything, so I left a card with the local humane society. Sometimes I get 20 bucks a run, sometimes a home made pie.
We have alot of bats get in the home at night. central air, bat gets in 1am around about. the first statment from the customer is it must of came in a door or window!
Just because a home does not have a bunch of bats does not mean it is not accessable.
I tell the folks no colony but your house is still accessable. which means if they do not want it to happen again they must do a bat proofing. if they do not care about the bat waking them up in the middle of the night then don't worry about it.
I am averaging 4 bat inspections a day with 95% sales I am booked into the 3nd week of sept right now. Guys sell the accessable jobs the same as a colony, just tell them unless the home is proofed it May happen again. you have to sell.
If the bat came in a window because the glass was half mast or a window ca was loose then tell them how to fix it duck tape around the ac unit and tape the top of the anchor window or make sure the storm windows are locked with fram to fram but if the hone has central air windows closed and no fire place then it came in a hole and got lost, adropping or 2 in the attic will comfirm it. sell the job at the same cost as a colony.
Few people in my town could affoard more than 20 bucks. I more or less charge that because i dont want to burn all my diesel picking up baby birds and rabbits (because its free) All my real advertising is 75 miles away or more, where the money is.
I believe in volunteerism when I can.I donate blood, pull cars out of snow banks, durring winter I drive meals on wheels one day a week. And cook for the Wisconsin Trappers Assn. whenever they ask and I can fit it in. Givng a little back to the community is important to me.
I hope you guys can help, I've got bats. Take a look at the pic I think it pretty much sums up the problem. The space that their entering is about 1 inch wide. Some of them have reached the inside of the house. I'm not sure how many are up there, but I did see 3 fly out at dusk a few nights ago. I first noticed the problem 2 weeks ago. I can see some guano on the rocks below the crack, but not a lot.
I'm planning on calling the people who biuld this fireplace chase for me and have them caulk it up tight. Is that a good plan? Should they try to flush out the bats before calking, how would they do that? What do you guys advise here? Thanks
PS - I'd do this myself, but thats an 8/12 roof 20' off the ground, me and heights don't get along.
A roofer isnt a guy that knows anything about bats. They will trap them in, and then you will have differant problems. Dead stinkey bats, or bats flying all over the house. Sealing is the last step. Ill be in land o lakes today, and mabe tomorrow.
OK I got an update. Its been a busy day. First off I want to thank MikeFlick for calling me and giving me a bat tutorial and advice. I'm very greatful for that.
I stared by searching the house looking for entrance points, I found none except the chimney chase. I searched the attic looking for bats, guano, and white urine stains I didn't find any. I fearfully, but bravely, climbed a ladder the 20ft and peaked over the gutter, looked at the chimey chase, rocks, and roof --- WHOA --- guano city! I'm not sure if I imagined it, but I'm sure I could hear bats up in that seam/crack scurring around.
At this point I'm pretty convinced that the bats are actually outside the house, and not roosting in the attic. I'm guessing that the few that have entered the house have somehow gotten under the chase-top, crawled over to the vent pipe setback, and from there into the attic. Then into the house via a hole that we have been using to access the attic during fireplace construction.
Time to call my fireplace guy. He's at my house in 45 min., and on my roof 5 minutes later, how's that for service? He crawls up the ladder, hops on the roof, and leaps on top of the chase like he's frickin' spiderman. He then stomps all over the top, and raps the heck out of the side of the chase top. OH YEAH I can hear the agitated bat squeeks from 20 feet below. Out come the bats, we count 10 that fly off into the woods. He gently pulls back the chase top, looks, and confirms no more bats in there, he then seals things up with silicone.
Get this, we talk trapping and hunting for 2 hours while he's here, he's a trapper and I never knew it! He's been using rebar for stakes since the 70's - I told him about earth anchors and I brought one out to show him - he flipped out like a kid at christmas, I think he's going to start using them.
So I've got an exclusion hole from the attic, that I've seen bat use, garded by a mouse trap. I'm sure that's not standard ADC protocal, but its what i'm going with.
And thats the story. thanks for reading. I hope to post a few pics tomorrow. As long as I'm not up to late taking bats out of a mouse trap.
