Running out of time here.Finishing up a couple residential types now. Starting to book late work into next spring now. Most all commercial work that came in too late or waited to long to make a decision.Trapping season is just around the corner also. Time to settle back to routine work and let the technicians work while I hit the road.

Its about over for this season. Cold temps rolling in this weekend, I have noticed some bats clustering in the roost sites preparing for winter and all fattened up. Others have already left for winter quarters that I monitor for such things.

Time to get all the steel ready for the upcoming season. Lots to do here yet.

Yes. Finished one yesterday, will finish another one tomorrow, and have a couple more scheduled. Bats fly 12 months of the year around here. I do give them a little longer to evacuate the premises this time of the year.

No more bat work this season. All our late bat work that came in this fall is tabled until next return / flight season. I am off trapping now until spring but have one technician working on call for what work comes in this time of year.

For people who do bat work all year, such as LATrapper, are there bats that migrate from northern states to your area?

I see quite a few of what I refer to as "transient" bats each fall and spring. I don't know if they are truly migrating or just searching for a warmer hibernaculm. They are mainly freetail bats. I don’t know where they came from, 'cause I don't know where they've been; and I don't know where they are going. They do show up in fairly large colonies, stay from a day to a week, then disappear. Similar to the migration of chimney swifts. They may join other local colonies or may move further South; I really don't know which. I understand that freetail bats are known to migrate up to 800 miles in the Southwest U.S. The Indiana Bat has been found to be hibernating in caves in Alabama and Florida http://www.outdooralabama.com/watchable-wildlife/what/Mammals/Bats/im.cfm

I received a call for a bat inspection a couple of days ago. I scheduled the inspection for today. There are two gable vents on a two story home. The home owner said that there were about a dozen bats in one gable vent and none in the other. The bats were confined to the gable vent; they had not physically entered the attic. When I called him this morning he reported that he had checked them yesterday and there was still about a dozen in one vent and none in the other. When I got there this morning, I found about 200 bats in each vent!! Where did the additional bats come from??? There is a cold front that stalled out about 50 miles North of me. The temperature here today reached about 75 degree. It is 62 degrees at 7:00 PM CST and is not forecast to fall below 55 degrees tonight. Did they move down from PA? Did they move from a different local colony? I certainly don't claim to know.

They are very small gable vents. I screened and installed excluders on each vent. I'm sure that they will all be gone before morning. Since I was expecting only a dozen bats; I didn't take a camera with me.

Your comments???

These circumstances are things that occur that without means of tracking and monitoring we can only guess as to where they came from. As far as why they were there I would assume the warm air flow coming from the vents attracted the bats initially. The additional bats were most likely from another mobile colony being forced to seek more suitable conditions for colonizing and somewhat wintering due to the cold snap in adjacent areas.

We dont know how far our bats really go. I presume thousands fly to the many caves within reasonable jump and layover routes until they reach their destination. I believe bats begin their journey as the cool temps of the fall and the shorter days begin to move into our region.

A few scattered colonies and parts of colonies across the country remain residents from time to time as our winter bat calls will bear this out.

So many things we dont know about nature and their instinctive impulses that drive wildlife to make decisions with regards to migration and forms of hibernation.

You saw my truck. And that was after I cleaned it out! blush Even I don't know what might be lost in there.

But you are right. I should keep a camera with me.

Some more of "your" bats arrived here this past week. As you can see, they are freetail bats. I don't know if they are found that far North. Click on picture to enlarge.

Customer called this morning to report that a bat was found crawling out of a crack between a light fixture and the ceiling. The bat had been captured and was taken to the health department for testing. He wanted an inspection of the home. You see the results of the inspection in the pictures above. He stated that he had been in the attic a week ago to get some Christmas decorations and that there were no bats on the vent at that time. The crack was sealed today to prevent entry into the home. Exclusion setup is scheduled for Sunday.

The temperature here is presently 70 degrees. Highs forecast to be in the upper 70's to the mid 60's for the next week. Keep sending them down. cool

It's 68 degrees here today, almost spring-like. I did a "noise in the wall" inspection, which turned out to be bats. Most unusual for us this far north in late December.

I have seen them crawl down the exterior walls and down interior pocket door areas of older homes when it is in the single digits. Obviously following the warm thermal air flow rising from a heated home. Most likely in search of a warmer climatic area to continue hibernation or to just catch some rays as they say.

I remember an old bed n breakfast that the bats were coming into the living space through the walls and coming out where the doors slid inside the walls. They looked at me like I was psychic when I told them about my theory. Funny how reading a little guano can make you look smart!
