This old boil pot setup served me well for the past 30 years . 30 years old and still in good shape . All I ever used to boil the rraps in is Hemlock bark . It preserved the pot as well as the traps .

Thanks for all the ideas, looks like this will be worth the trouble, seems they last a long time.

those using 2/3 barrel and propane, how long to get to a boil on a warm day?
And will a tank of propane do a couple boiling jobs?

Why not use a 35 gallon barrel if you are worried about weight?

It usually takes me about 1/2 hr to 45 mins to get er boiling with no top on the pot . I get 1 complete boil with the pot full of traps . I like to leave them in the dye overnight to cool ant the traps come out coal black . After I take the traps out the next day . I have another 1/2 pot of traps and it will bring the water to just starting to boil . That is on a 20 lb tank of propane . 30 lb'er works great for 2 boilings . If I put a top on the pot I would probbably get the 2 full boils on the 20 lb tank....

With the price of propane I think I might try wood this year. There is plenty of that for free.... ;\)

Anyone have a pic of their setup using half a barrel being used as a fire box?

The propane is so clean and a lot less work . $22.00 for a 30 lb'er I'll stick with the propane . 1 coon will pay for the propanwe ..

I agree, I usually have other equipment and traps hanging up in the area and dont like the thought of smoke all over them.

I do have to admit, that a few good pieces of oak will sure get the water hot quick. Its just hard to regulate.
