Yeah, and a monkey might fly outta my...... 1 face cord = 4x8 feet by the length of one piece of split wood (18-24 inches) So..it takes at least 2 face cords to make a full cord. so....basically, I'm right again! LOL!! Looks like some good birch! I'm jealous...seriously.

The first year after I bought Barb, she cut and split 10 cords of spruce and stacked them all in the woodshed. She also cooked every meal that year. Did a lot of skinning, packed water, made fire, butchered moose. She was kinda slow getting the trucks waxed though.
Good job Hup. It's hard to find a good stacker for sure.

That is a beautiful pile of birch! Wow, I'm super jealous. That was really nice of White to remind you to run the saw lengthwise on the tree so his wood wouldn't become rotten. LOL

Why is that still sitting there? It was supposed to be split and stacked in the woodshed long ago. Actually that's about 20% of what I left her to do so she has made some small progress.

Now this is a splitter: http://www.timberwolfcorp.com/log_splitters/default.asp?id=10Don't even have to lift the log on it . The machine does all the work for you.

Wow, CB, I'll trade you some of this "turning stock" for one of THOSE! LOL
The last batch I did taught me that there is no such thing as "don't even have to lift the log". They don't all roll right onto that lift, as convenient as it looks.
I used a splitter much like that one for the big batch of spruce. That was nice. Who knows where that tool is now?
But splitting these baby logs is my anger management routine ;o) I think about something that makes me REALLY mad, and lift that 10 pound sledge and WHAM! It is soooooo satisfying ;o)

Grubstake, birch bark is water proof and holds in the moisture so if you split the bark open it will dry better. Better yet to split it right away into halves. Even round bucked in 16" long chunks, birch will rot before it dries if you stack it in the round....yep, found that out the hard way....

I wonder how often she envisions Ken's face on a piece of wood just befor the maul smokes it? She has some foreign language saying that she repeats several times when she encounters a particularly recalcitrant piece of wood. Timing is everything. She says it just as the maul starts it's downward path.

Barb I do love it as well and against the Dr's wishes have managed to split a bit this summer but am afraid most of the pile is going to be left up to the boys, as the fishboss splits fish but she wont split much more then a few rounds of cottonwood for the smoke house

When it comes to divying up the chores, splitting fish does not equate to splitting wood!

Ken you really think the video will help it didn't the last time !! I get the easy part with the fish I catch them and cut heads and tails so I can grab all the eggs I need to catch more fish. I tried getting her to fix the busted cranker cord on the chain saw tonight and all I got was THE LOOK!! Dang I hate them stupid recoil springs LOL Guess I am out of trouble she just handed me a cup of tea and I never even asked for it good thing she didn't stop to read over my shoulder

The one I like is the spring on the Tundra that breaks at 30 below when you try to start it. With the chain saw at least you can do it in the house. I haven't figured out how Barb can fix the spring and split wood at the same time. Her chain usually won't reach the machine.

I don't have any pictures, but last summer a friend dropped some walnuts and a few maples in town. We ended up getting 9 truck loads up to the cab of my dads 3/4 ton Chevy truck with an 8ft bed. It's all split (hydraulic) and about 2/3s of it is stacked. I stacked it all. We have 5 rows that are about 20'x 6' and 3 rows that are about 15'x 4'. I don't know how much this is compared to what you guys are splitting, but I think it is a lot. We have enough wood for 2 years and we have a wood furnace with a few electric baseboards.
Edited by kmuellertrapper (06/30/08 08:37 PM) Edit Reason: forgot to say how it was split

Boy, KmTrapper, walnut and maple!?!? We only use those for fine woodwork. I cringe to think of burning it ;o) It sounds like a LOT of wood. Good job! That stacking does get tedious...Speaking of that, I'd better go do some of that in the woodshed this evening.
