You can find a job OK but it may not be the one you really want. Don't let that stuff stop you. Most of those restrictions are on jobs funded by the state or controlled by corrupt unions...oh that's redundant isn't it.

It is kind of hard to answer your question Minker because you sound as tho you think living out of the back of your truck is a BAD thing! LOL!
Over the years I have known a LOT of people who have worked at cannery jobs, waiter and waitress jobs, construction jobs, etc, who were either living in a camper or a tent. Some of them have even found old abandoned miners "digs" (along the RR tracks) to inhabit or gun emplacements left over from WWII (on Kodiak).
Once you meet people you start to hear about other and better jobs. It is a very Alaskan way to get your foot in the door.
Just don't get a dog yet ;o)

if you can walk and talk, you can get a job in Alaska. Some, all you need to do is show up.

heck, then you could contract out in places like idaho..

try this site. you will have to register but there are tons of jobs there.. also http://www.state.ak.us on the right side there are job links.
http://alexsys.labor.state.ak.us/

or http://www.adn.com search jobs.

Also, a lot of the "Alaska resident only" jobs are given to out of state people if no residents apply, or if applicants aren't qualified. What line of work are you considering?

I work for a heavy equipment dealer as a parts person, been around strip and underground mines for 30 plus years. My wife is a RN, with 25 years in the ER and now is a shift supervisor in a smaller hospital. What would our chances for finding work in Alaska? I was there 3 years ago on a Black bear hunt - Halibut fishing trip out of Homer with Alaska Coastal Marine. Really liked AK, but may be a little old to make the move.

Minker ,
White 17 is right with your skills you could do two
1.things keep busy all year working for a city or the state.
2. keep busy in the late spring thru fall even into the winter and have several months off a year.
Road construction crews are often looking for guys capable and willing to spend months at a time in remote locations bouncing around the state from job to job.

Sounds like you could be plowing snow while the rest of us were trapping!

Seriously though, you should google up jobs at Pogo Mine (Delta) or Fort Knox Mine (Fairbanks.) They are normally looking for operators; Ft. K has more large equipment. Also Usabelli Coal Mine at Healy.

Don't go the "forestry" route here. You will be poor for the rest of your life!

plowed snow for as long as 20 hours straight.

spent 3 days straight hauling snow in 40ft. side dumps this winter , feds told dhl air hub snow had to go so we loaded it up and trucked it away .

never thought about mine work pete.

i'd heard along time ago not to look into forestry jobs in AK, you starve unless you can eat the trees your protecting.

i've looked at alot of city job postings, and even more state job postings , including the alaska railroad. thats where i've seen alot of alaska residents only postings.

i'll check into the mine jobs.

thanks

I was in Alaska for nearly 25 years, I was military and my last 2 duty stations were at Ft. Wainright and Richardson. When I retired, I stayed but could not survive on what my retirement was and I struggled to find work. Forget the biological jobs, I even did the fisheries thing once, talk about a sorry [Please excuse my language, this filter is an idiot] job counting fish for $7.50 an hr, and the burkenstock wearing liberals in the biological sciences jobs make me sick. I could'nt wait to leave, Alaska used to be nice and the people were even better (20 years ago) but now there are way too many liberals. The desert is much better, and I don't have to shovel snow anymore, and the liberals are all on the west coast. They don't come out here.

All I can say is enjoy your desert. Without those guys counting fish (and the going rate currently is aproximately $17 an hour in this area anyway) for the biological managers, my son wouldn't have fish to make a living from. Oh by the way the local fish manager wears them funny sandels but one thing he is not is liberal. \:\)

I enjoy it very much, no winter, no snow, not dark all winter, no more putting tin foil in the windows so you can sleep in the summer, NO MORE MOSQUITOES, no break up mess, no combat fishing. You believe those fish cops are helping you? No they are taking their pay check and putting down whatever they want, not saying all are bad, but most don't care about the fisheries, its their next paycheck they care about, everyone of them was a dope smoker too, but I'm glad to hear they are paid better now. Of course I did in 1980 too.

You can have the desert. I've tried it, both Cal and Arizona. Hotter than Hades, every thing either stings, bites, is poisonous, or sticks you.
The fishing is mostly following the stocking truck, the flash floods suck, and waiting to get drawn to go hunting is lame at best.
The restrictions on trapping make it almost impossible to do, let alone enjoy, and the state taxes are astronomicle.
Give me God's country, the great state of Alaska!

anyone know much about the delta junction area ? pogo mine has some openings.

anyone know much about the arctic slope regional corp. ? they got jobs up on the north slope .it didn't say it but since its a native corp., i'd figure they won't hire me .

found jobs at the greens creek mine on admiraly island near juneau , anyone know anything about it ? don't like the sounds of the juneau area as far as trapping or hunting oppertunitys but maybe it would work out .

Yeah, but look where you are Juneau isn't "real" Alaska, you don't get 60 below like we did when I lived in Fairbanks. I miss getting away from people once in a while, and I do admit the hunting was primo, but still doesnt outway the other stuff.

I am there with you guys on cold being better than hot. I am currently in Iraq and can attest to the suckiness of the desert. Give me the cold anyday, and I don't mind not having light. We spend a lot of time in the dark here anyway. I am very much looking forward to getting up there, and possibly meeting quite a few of you guys.

i just hope they don't close the gates before i get up there.

can't blame anyone up there , wether they were born there or not for not wanting anymore people coming up ( atleast ones that want to stay). i'm sure some of you make some money from the tourist trade in one way or another.

put in quite a few online job apps. and more to do . we'll see what turns out.

No one. The Army did, back in 1982 and when it moved us away we knew we'd always come back. I didn't have any 'help' moving up here when we did come back and didn't expect any. So we've been here and seen LOTS of people move from the Lower 48 and not even make it thru a winter here without complaining about the snow and cold. What did they THINK it was gonna be like?

Hup I knew someone would say something like that and I take NO offense to it, cuz I really don't care what others think of me You should know that by NOW neighbor-from-NY! LOL
