There have been times when it's dry that I watered the grass where my traps were set to draw the mole to that area of the yard and it has usually worked out well. A few other times I set in tunnels on two or more sides leading into where I thought there might be a den and watered the "den area" (usually at the base of a tree or in landscaping) and the mole moved out and under a trap before I finished setting the rest of the yard. Sometimes I didn't know if they were attracted by the watering or driven away from it... but it seems to work if you have time to mess with it.

Good point. I have watered down mole runs, much like you were watering a row of peas.....I have always found that to be successful, as it draws in earth worms. Where goes the prey, goes the predator! smile

Oh we get plenty of moles here in the fall. People leave their watering systems set for summer levels, and as the days get cooler and shorter, the lawns get really wet, and the moles have a field day.

This is my slowest mole trapping period of the year. and I have had not returnum moles in the past and believe you are right about the dry causing it. Why would a mole go back down a dry tunnel? Ain't no food there for sure.

I'm hoping we get some good fall rains soon. I have several places were moles go through a yard buy will not return through that initial tunnel...which by the way, makes me look like an amature when I come back and see more damage and no sprung traps. shocked

With the rain from the hurricane, I have noticed some yards in the neighborhood already showing signs of mole damage.

Hi LT, thanks for posting the pics. How tight is the fit of the traps in the tunnels? They have to fit pretty snug to work consistently. If the tunnel is much bigger than the jaw spread on the traps, the moles will sometimes dig around the traps. I have a slightly larger model available in case the traps do seem a little small. Here in CA, I only use the "standard" size. Have no use for the bigger size, but some guys get bigger moles and seem to like them.

Steve the traps you sent me fit perfectly for my needs, they have also solved a problem for me that is much appriciated.

Every year I have few jobs in Aug usually where the moles do not tunnel per se they just pop up mole hills from a mostly vertical hole. Your traps are the only consistant solution for this in my area I have found....

Thank You.

Had a good many set-offs at first, Steve. A bigger trap just might be the answer though....So far about 28 or 29 moles in those 2 traps.

Paul, nearly everyone has told me that you cannot trap a mole hill unless it has a two way tunnel under it. Can you give us more details about how you are using Steve's trap to do this?

I would be glad to. Every mole hill has a verticle tunnel that the mole is generally using to push up the dirt. What I did with Steves trap was simply to stabilize it in that verticale tunnel.

It worked great and is to me the greatest advantage to Steves trap. All of the other traps are designed to activate when mole has pushed up on the trigger from a horzontal tunnel and are pretty ineffective on any sort of a verticle tunnel.

I hope this helps.

One last note, if that mole hill is not fresh you are wasting you time there anyway. It has to be one that is active.

...finally! A mole trapper, with credibility, who also knows that with the right set-up and trap, catching moles at mole mounds CAN and IS done with some regularity...dispite what that so-called expert claimed! wink

I have never tried setting my traps or any other mole traps at the mound. When I clear off the mounds, occasionally I'll see a mound with an open tunnel running up through the mound, but I also see many mounds with no tunnels in them. I always figured it was just the mounds where the moles were still actively pushing dirt out that would have the open tunnels, and that mounds left behind where the mole was no longer pushing out dirt would have their tunnels plugged up with dirt.

It always seemed to me that it would be hit or miss trying to predict if a mole would come back to a mound, and even if it did, that it probably would be pushing dirt in front of it, which could interfere with the operation of the trap.

But I really haven't tried it.

Here's a picture from last week of some mole mounds on a brand new lawn in an expensive new landscape. This guy was really going to town.

Yes, this is helpful and I would like to try it. I guess the other question is whether you leave the verticle tunnel open or cover it in some way.

Don't know as I could afford ya! But I would sure be interested in some lessons. I have still been trapping moles in tunnels between mole hills with the OOS traps, but if I could just stick a trap in the mole hill this time of year and get good results, it would be a whole lot simpler.
