I have some S.C. #2s they had a bump at the end of the dog that they were saying should be a nightlacht. I didnt like it much so I filed the bump off and file a little shelf in the end of the dog for a nightlacht works well for me.

I just started to night latch my Sleepy Creek traps. It made a big differance. File a notch at the end of the dog a in the illi
ustation from the manufacture. Then shorten the end to adjust pan travel. I can.post some pics tomorrow evening. Paul

Most people file the notch in the pan slot. Paws-a-trip's ARE night latched.

You have square pans i take. Put the dog in a vise, file it flat and square it up on the side that goes under the pan, take a triangle file and make a small notch on the end of the dog, your are done. I file all my dogs on my traps, never the pan, that is how I was taught and has worked for me, I have a bunch of SC traps, Duke , Bridger.

Sleeply Creek #2 double long spring

(1) set trap so pan is level.

(2) Mark dog where pan and dog meet

(3) clamp visegrip on dog on the mark you made and file half way through

(4) TA DA!!!! nightlatched sleepy creek

I guess that's one way of doing it but why don't you just file a short notch in the dog (l/32" or so) and adjust the cross frame until the pan sets level? With a night latch that long the pan would have to travel down a very long way before the trap fires. Not really gaining anything.

your right, that works to and probly easier. Forgot to say to file down the end until its a hair trigger.

I like your idea of using the vice grips to hold onto the dog and use them as a file guide. I will definately try that because it is always a pain to get the night latch started in the dog.

I've used hand held chainsaw blade sharpeners to but, I still had to hit it with a file to get it just right.
