UCLA gets injunction against animal rights groups
04/23/2008 06:46:00 AM PDT
http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_9025470

Attorneys for UCLA on Tuesday obtained a preliminary injunction
against animal rights groups and activists accused of harassing
university researchers who conduct experiments using animals.

The injunction granted by Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Terry B.
Friedman extends and expands a temporary restraining order granted
Feb. 22, according to UCLA Chancellor Gene Block.

"This preliminary injunction is an important step in UCLA's ongoing
efforts to protect researchers from extremists who have engaged in
unlawful tactics to advance their beliefs and we intend to vigorously
enforce it while pursuing a permanent injunction," Block said in a
statement.

"UCLA holds free speech sacrosanct, but the use of Molotov cocktails,
vandalism and threats is not protected speech," he said. "We remain
committed to the humane use of animals in research that is heavily
regulated and critical to the development of lifesaving treatments for
a wide variety of ailments."

According to UCLA, the preliminary injunction prohibits three groups
and five individuals from coming with 50 feet of the residences of
UCLA personnel involved in animal research during any demonstration
and 150 feet at night. It also prohibits the posting of personal
information about UCLA personnel on Web sties maintained by the groups
and individuals.

The order was expanded to include those acting in concert with the
already named individuals and groups. Those failing to comply with the
injunction are subject to contempt of court charges.

The order remains in effect until a trial is held on whether to issue
a permanent injunction. A Feb. 17, 2009, trial date is set.

The groups named in the injunction are the UCLA Primate Freedom
Project, the Animal Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Brigade.
The individuals named are Linda Faith Greene, Hillary Roney, Kevin
Olliff, Ramin Saber and Tim Rusmisel, according to UCLA.

"Two of the groups (the Animal Liberation Front and Animal Liberation
Brigade) are clandestine organizations that regularly break the law,"
Dr. Jerry Vlasak, a trauma surgeon and press officer for the North
American Animal Liberation Press Office, told City News Service. "The
Animal Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Brigade neither care nor
know about the restraining order."

UCLA researchers have been the target of several attacks in recent
months. In February, someone left an incendiary device at the home of
professor Edythe London, who uses monkeys in nicotine-addiction
research funded by tobacco giant Philip Morris. The device reportedly
charred her front door.

Animal activists also have claimed credit for breaking a window in
London's house and using a garden hose to flood the ground floor,
causing more than $20,000 in damage, The Los Angeles Times reported.

According to the university, Molotov cocktail-type devices have been
left near the homes of UCLA faculty on three occasions since June
2006. Their homes have also been vandalized and they have received
threatening phone calls, e-mails and -- on one occasion -- a package
rigged with razor blades, the university reported.

UCLA and various law enforcement organizations are offering a combined
$170,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and convictions
of those responsible for the attempted firebombings.

Good to see someone in the judicial system sees terrorism as plain old terrorism, regardless of the "cause" behind it. Not all Californians are wackos, I guess

And this is the kind of teaching that such gullible people get to follow and become so emotionally involved in that they can not register facts if their lives depended upon it.

Let Live NW Animal Rights Conference
Portland State University
http://www.letliveconference.org:80/

About Let Live; Animals belong to themselves, not to us. They should
not suffer in our systems of food, science, entertainment and fashion.
Instead, they should live free of the tyranny we put upon them. But
they cannot claim this freedom alone. "Let Live" is a grassroots forum
for people who want to help. Through an open, respectful, and friendly
environment this conference will provide an opportunity for attendees
to learn skills and strategies to become better advocates for the
animals, no matter ones experience level in activism.

This conference is for first-timers, experienced activists, and
anybody in between who hopes to make a real difference for animals and
build a stronger, more effective community and animal liberation
movement. This conference is for anybody who wants to live and let
live.

"Let Live" is taking place in Portland, Oregon, June 27th-29th, 2008.
It will be held this year on the campus of Portland State University.
It is being organized by Vegans for Animal Advocacy, with support from
No Compromise, Herbivore Magazine, and Food Fight Grocery. Much more
info to come soon, please check back often and subscribe to the blog
to stay up to date. Any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch. See
you in June.

Thanks.
The "Let Live" Crew

Saturday
April 12th
Registration"Let Live" would greatly appreciate any help you can offer
to offset the costs of the event. We're asking for a suggested
donation of $10 to register for both Saturday and Sunday's events. Of
course, if you want to donate more, that would be appreciated too.

Due to space restrictions, we're having to put a limit on the number
of attendees. The safe bet number is 200 people, and that would allow
for everybody having a seat in the biggest room. We'll allow some
overbooking because realistically not everybody is going to need to be
in that big room at the same time but to be safe book now to ensure
you get a spot! Don't worry though, we'll still try to make room for
folks who don't show up until the day of the conference if at all
possible - but we may be down to standing room only at that point!

Wanna register now and get it over with? The easy way is to PayPal us
$10. Make sure you click on the box to enter your name and all that
stuff. Somebody will write you back to confirm your registration. If
you prefer, you can send a check (payable to Food Fight Grocery) or
well concealed cash, along with contact info to:

Let Live Conference
c/o Food Fight Grocery
1217 SE Stark St
Portland, OR 97214

Sponsorship and Tabling; Attention businesses and groups! We would
LOVE your help making this happen. Here's what we're thinking in terms
of tabling opportunities:

Business: $300 (only five tables still available!)
Bigger NonProfits: $100 (contact us about availability)
Tiny Local Grassroots: free shared table
Tables are going fast so contact us to be sure we still have room! If
you want to be involved, but those three options don't work.. how
about this?

$500 Platinum Level Sponsorship - You give us $500 and put up our web
banner and link. We put materials/samples you send in our registration
package and we acknowledge you for your sponsorship in the package and
on our website and do a web banner ad for you as well.
$250 Gold Level Sponsorship - You give us $250 and put up our web
banner. We list you in registration package and on website.
Contributor - You give us $100 and put up our web banner. We list you
as a contributor.
A NOTE ON MONEY RAISED

Just so you know, nobody is trying to profit off this conference. Any
excess money raised will be split between grassroots AR activist
groups and prisoner support funds. We promise.

The opening remarks are the key to their nonsensical understanding of our place in nature as a species that must live with nature not apart from it as these self righteous twits are offering. It is very important that folks that are involved with animals recognize the money & efforts that are being spent to cause an end to your choice to hunt, trap, fish, have health researching done in biolabs, raise farm animals & pets and enjoy your lives with animals.

The begging continues for the criminals in their midst. They try to destroy animal enterprises of other persons but they keep Companion animals themselves which is basically a code for controlling the animals they keep. Good point to note such hypocrisy within such groups.

Candle-Light Vigil for Animals in Labs at Eliot Spindel's house last
night.(sunday)
author: emdee
April 28, 2008

http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2008/04/375044.shtml

In a last chance to commemorate World Lab Animal Liberation Week and World Week for Animals in Labs(WWAIL), local activists took to Lake Oswego's streets, & sidewalks to deliver their message of compassion toward animals and disgust for vivisectors, to Eliot Spindel's house,a ONPRC Researcher for OHSU. Standing across the street, in silence, after a brief intro, vigil attendees held signs, cameras, and candles.

The event even sparked a flame in a local neighbor to quickly go
inside and make a sign, then came back out and join-in. (holding a sign that read "you suck" over at Spindel's house.)

Local activists-many carrying signs, cameras, and candles, took their message of compassion toward animals and disgust for vivisectors, to the home of Eliot Spindel, a researcher at Oregon Health & Sciences University's(O.H.S.U.) Oregon National Primate Research Center(O.N.P.R.C.) who they say, "...continues to torture, mutilate, poison, dissect, and then ultimately kills multiple animals every year in the name of science, with his nicotine studies". Protests and educational outreach have been on-going daily throughout the period from Saturday, April 19, 2008 through Sunday, April 27, 2008-World-Wide.

"The protests last weekend and yesterday were incredible.", said a protester who identified them self as "Banana Peel". The protests incorporated a strong emphasis on community outreach and education.

"Our goal is to educate consumers, neighbors, and the tax-payers about the horrors of animal testing labs like ONPRC and the benefits of a compassionate and cruelty-free lifestyle." Thousands of pieces of literature were distributed on the streets of Portland, Oregon, during the week. Yesterday, the last day of World Lab Animal Liberation Week, and World Week for Animals In Labs(W.W.A.I.L), focused on Eliot Spindel, who uses funding from the National Institutes of Health(N.I.H.) to research on primates here in Oregon at the Beaverton/Hillsboro facility on 185th Avenue.

One flier-showing a picture of a very small baby primate* (similar to the one in the picture here but younger, and smaller) read, "OHSU experimenter Eliot Spindel has been killing infant monkeys just like Thimble*(name of monkey/primate in picture on flier) in nicotine studies for years. In fact, for at least 24 years, Spindel has been on the public dole. Just since 1992, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has given him at least $7,600,000 of our tax dollars to conduct nicotine experiments. And he will continue to get our tax dollars until 2012 to keep killing monkeys unless we convince OHSU officials and the NIH that we are dead serious about seeing them stopped.

*Baby Thimble, cut from her mother's womb, was deemed unsuitable for experimentation, but was used for breeding more monkeys for Spindel's experiments.

Spindel's work involves implanting nicotine pumps into the backs of pregnant monkeys, delivering daily doses of the addictive substance to the mothers so that he can cut their babies out at various stages of development and dissect their lungs.
It has been noted that: some of the babies are allowed to go full term and then cut out of their mothers' womb causing severe depression in the adults and terror in the infants.

"In order to educate people about the harmful effects of smoking
during pregnancy, it is much more useful to study women who smoke, along with the children born to them. Money used to cut up monkeys would be better spent on human studies, smoking cessation education, and prevention programs to keep youth free and clear of smoking's harm."

Multnomah County's Board of Commissioners, recently all approved a "Budget Modification HD-34 Appropriating $108,725 Financial Assistance Award from the State of Oregon, Department of Human Services for Tobacco Prevention and Education." "None of those funds will be spent on animal experimentation.", said a young lady who testified before the Board of Commissioner's accepting the money for her department.

Lake Oswego police also attended the vigil, one man video-taped
vigil-go-ers(from in front of Spindel's house-in plain-clothes James Peterson-? D.P.S.S.T.<Department of Public Safety Standards and Training a.k.a. also known as badge # number> #35507) while another called-in license plates on the police radio, and others drove around the neighborhood. Lake Oswego police also lined-up to greet vigil-go-ers as they left the area, lining up over 8 highly-marked police cars, with possible un-marked cars present, with more arriving as vigil-go-ers left.

A request for a comment to a Lake Oswego Police Officer was answered with "I have no comment".

No arrests were reported from this event at the time this was sent to print.

Animal activists picket U researchers, go to jail
By Nate Carlisle
04/28/2008 05:03:08 PM MDT
http://www.sltrib.com/ci_9084437

Police in Salt Lake City arrested four people and cited 12 others who
were protesting animal research.
The protest and the arrests occurred in the 2700 East block of
Eagle Way Sunday at an address published by animal rights activists as
the home of two University of Utah brain researchers.
Police were called to the address about 1 a.m. Sunday and said
they found 10 people, most of whom were wearing bandanas on their
face. The group said they were holding a silent candlelight vigil and
the bandanas were for the "faceless victims" of animal research,
according to a police log.
No arrests or citations were made at the time, but police returned
about 8 p.m. and found 16 protesters. This time, police cited 12
people for picketing in a residential area. The other four were
arrested and taken to jail on suspicion of the picketing, providing
false information to police and outstanding warrants.
No injuries or damage was reported.

My Journey towards becoming a Doctor (Blog)
Screw you: World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week
Posted by WanabeMD at 2:06 PM
Thursday, April 24, 2008
http://wanabemd.blogspot.com/2008/04/screw-you-world-laboratory-animal.html

Great, I just got an email from my PI informing us of "World
Laboratory Animal Liberation Week" (this week) and a march on our
campus to MY building tomorrow. This means that I can't get into said
building to get my research done without fearing for my own personal
safety. For the record, some of the research I do includes animals,
mainly mice, but sometimes rats, rabbits, or sheep. Guess what? I'm
perfectly fine with using them and I do everything I can to make sure
the animals are treated with respect and are never in any pain. So
does every other researcher I know; animal research is strictly
governed by every University.

I wonder.....
I assume the people who are protesting the use of animals in research
are vegetarians, most of them probably vegans (if not then the
hypocrisies have already begun). But:

-Do they ever visit the doctor?
-Do they ever use ANY medication, even Tylenol or Advil?
-Have they ever undergone any medical treatments?

If so, (begin sarcasm) SHAME ON THEM FOR CAPITALIZING ON THESE POOR
DEFENSELESS ANIMAL'S LIVES FOR THEIR OWN GOOD (end sarcasm). In
reality, if they have then they are hypocrites and should crawl back
into whatever hole they came from (or house they're squatting in).

I ask them this: If a loved one was lying on the OR table, rapidly
de-sating and facing death, would authorize a procedure that had been
tested on animals (virtually ALL medical procedures)? Or, would you
value the life of an animal that was bred only for research purposes
over the life of someone you love?

Sure, we all want free healthcare (cough), but please god, don't hurt
the cute little mice.....

Don't mean squat. Just like gun control, the criminals and AR's (Same-Same) don't care about the law.

The Best Judge UCLA Money Can Buy
Conflict of Interest Hovers Over Judge Terry Friedman

UCLA's unconstitutional attempt at silencing above ground legal
activists was facilitated in court yesterday by Judge Terry Friedman;
Friedman, in Department J at the Santa Monica civil courthouse, did
not voluntarily disclose at two separate hearings his close
affiliation with UCLA as well as his financial relationship with the
law firm representing UCLA, Irell and Manella LLP, of Newport Beach.

Judge Friedman is a UCLA graduate and alumni and this in itself should
have been reason enough to recuse himself from hearing the restraining
order (TRO) action brought against five picketers and three
organizations who have protested animal abuse on campus and in the
neighborhoods of UCLA faculty. Judge Friedman was also the Executive
Director of the Bet Tzedeck Legal Services and remains involved
financially with the Jewish charity, having to admit in open court he
still attends Bet Tzedeck fund raisers. The defendants' attorney found
out minutes before the second hearing that Irell and Manella LLP not
only provide financial backing to Bet Tzedek but several partners in
the firm have for many years held and currently hold board member
positions at Bet Tzedek!

When defense attorney Christine Garcia put these two issues on the
record in court Wednesday (Friedman did not disclose any of this
information voluntarily) a noticeable discomfort in Friedman's body
language was witnessed by observers in the courtroom. He then chuckled
and belittled these affiliations, quickly moving on with the
proceedings without recusing himself nor allowing the defense to bring
a motion for his dismissal. He denied virtually all defense motions
while granting those for his benefactors, the plaintiffs.

Friedman ruled to not only keep the existing ex parte restraining
order granted previously by the presiding Judge Rosenberg, but he
added to and expanded the restraining order by replacing a specific
paragraph that Judge Rosenberg had Irell and Manella LLP remove from
the TRO. He refused to admit virtually every defense declaration into
evidence while admitting all those for the plaintiffs.

Jerry W. Vlasak, MD, a press officer for the North American Animal
Liberation Press Office, stated after he heard about the rulings, "How
stupid can this Terry Friedman be? Not only does he flaunt his obvious
financial biases for the plaintiffs, but fails to realize that
removing legal and constitutional avenues of redress, as history
proves out, will only promote illegal actions on behalf of the
non-human animals being gratuitously tortured to death in places like
UCLA laboratories. Its an affront to justice that this judge is
literally in the pockets of Irell and Manella and an alumni of the
very University who is suing these defendants. It should surprise no
one when underground activists once again act against the animal
abusers being protected by such a biased judge and court."

Two of the organizations named in the restraining order granted
Wednesday are clandestine groups that utilize economic sabotage,
animal liberations and other tactics to highlight and stop animal
abuses such as those occurring in UCLA laboratories. Since their
members remain underground and unknown, and since they have already
demonstrated a willingness to disregard the laws that protect and
facilitate animal abusers, its is unlikely they would pay any heed to
the restraining order, even if they knew it existed.

The Salt Lake Tribune
Three animal rights activists arrested
They are accused under a law that requires protesters stay at least
100 feet from a home
By Brian Maffly
04/29/2008
http://origin.sltrib.com/news/ci_9091637

They gathered in the middle of the night on a residential street,
their faces covered with bandannas, holding candles and chanting
slogans against what they believe is unnecessary abuse of primates in
the name of science.
A series of protests Sunday outside a University of Utah
researcher's home resulted in the first arrests under a new Salt Lake
City ordinance requiring picketers to remain at least 100 feet from a
residence.
Salt Lake City police booked into jail three animal-rights
activists who were quickly released on their own recognizance.
The targeted scientist, whose research uses monkeys to study the
way the brain receives stimuli from the eye, declined to be
interviewed. U. administrators, however, denounced the demonstrations
as intimidation.
A group called the Primate Freedom Project has singled out for
pickets at least four U. scientists, providing photos and addresses on
its Web site. The group did not organize Sunday's protests, which
likely spun off from a conference the group held last weekend,
spokesman Jeremy Beckham said.
"They want to shame researchers and embarrass them. Carrying signs
is not intimidation. That's a protest," said Beckham, a U. student who
founded the group's Utah chapter in 2003.
U. officials see the protests as a threat to researcher safety,
particularly in light of confrontational behavior elsewhere in the
country. Researchers in California have been assaulted in their homes.
"It's a priority for the university to protect our researchers and
their families and the privacy of their homes," U. spokeswoman Coralie
Alder said. "They [activists] are allowed to protest on campus.
Posting personal information on the Web site . . . is not acceptable."
Numerous protocols are in place to ensure the legitimacy of the
research and necessity of using animals, U. officials stress.
"Every new surgical technique, every new device implanted in a
person, every new drug has to be tested in animals before it can be
used in people. This is something the people of the United States
acting through Congress require," said Tom Parks, interim vice
president for research.
Sunday's protests began at 1 a.m. Police responded to the
scientist's neighborhood where they encountered a small group of
masked protesters staging a silent vigil, according to a police log
entry. Officers warned protesters to stay at least 100 feet from a
home, but made no arrests. Several callers summoned police again
around 8 p.m. They arrived to find 16 activists chanting and waving
signs. This time the officers issued citations to 12 of the picketers,
arresting at least three young men. "One refused a ticket and
requested to go to jail," Officer Bob Ellard said.
Beckham said the cited activists intend to fight the citations.
