I live in a county that it is legal to trap or hunt yotes year round. As a matter of fact, our county pays a 75 dollar bounty for every yote killed. What is the best method of catching yotes without catching fox, cats, etc?? I use offset traps so I can release any off catch, but I was wondering If anyone has anything specific for yotes. I would rather not make my fox too trap shy.

use coyot urine instead of fox. the foxes and other smaller stuff tend to shy away from it.but the coyotes obviously dont care. predator calling also works good.

Use snares put on deer stop 13 inchs from the end . fox will get away but yote will be there. 10 lbs pan tension should be about right no fox.

I am sorry but this is not what I have found to be true. Coyote urine is just as atractive to red fox as it is to coyotes.

If I had a bounty to work with I would be den hunting right now. I would call near the den or make sets near the den area. I would use coyote sounds and smells.

I work coyotes year around, snares are great and there are trap sets that work well, not 100% (nontarget) proof.

I would share some of these with You through P.M.'s if You would like. Scott

During summer time trapping you need to narrow your locations down to den locations. Summer time yotes dont travel much at all. They tend to stay and den up where food and water are readily available.

I go down in trap size, usally to a 1.75 for less damage for the non-target catches. I make more flat sets during the summer using nothing more than good yote urine.

I use snares alot more during the summer, mainly on growed up fence line crawl thru's.

I live in Halifax County but Charlotte County has the same bounty. As a matter of fact, you have to take the yotes to the dog pound to collect your money and they cut the tongue out of the coyote because some hunters were getting paid in Halifax and taking them to Charlotte County and getting the bounty twice for the same animal. I'm not doing it so much for the money but I have a pretty high concentration of yotes on my farm that I am trying to eliminate. My farm is about 3 miles from a fox pen, the owners of the fox pen brought in a truck load of coyotes to run the fox dogs on because they were cheaper than fox. Bringing coyotes to Halifax is illegal and they recieved word that they were fixing to get busted so they opened the door and made man drives and ran them all out. Two friends of mine came out here yesterday morning to turkey hunt. They had called in turkeys to a wheat field that I had planted as a cover crop. Before the turkeys got close enough to shoot they said that they spooked and a couple of seconds later 2 coyotes came in right behind them tracking them. This bothers me because I run my rabbit dogs about 3 times a week at dusk and night.

If I had to guess, because every trapper within 100 miles is going to be trapping coyotes in your county.

Is that a bad thing? The coyotes are eliminating the fox, cats, and everything else because they are on the top of the food chain. This county only has a hand full of trappers, we could use some more.

If you locate their travel area put a blended set right beside their trail set a cow chip next to it and use red fox gland lure in the middle of the cow chip. This set as taken a lot of coyotes for me. There are no sets that I know of that will take only coyotes. The way I avoid to many non-target animals is to trail the coyotes until you find a place that the other animals are not traveling and set up there.

Thanks for all the replys, I bought a trail camera tonight so I'm going to install it and try to narrow down their patterns. I've got plenty of cow pattys but I'm not sure that I am familiar with a blended set. Always been a dirthole trapper and not very educated on much else. If you could further explain I would appreciate it. Also, how much territory do yotes normally range?
I appreciate all of the help.

A blended set is a flat set that as grass or leaves blended in to make it look natural as the surrounding area.
Coyotes range is different in different areas. Just guessing in your area and this time of year around 3 to 5 miles.
