I dont have any pics of them but if you google feral hog tpaps and go to the univ. of texas page they have some real good ones there. tha ones i use are 5'x16' hog panels with a sliding type door. Cut the panels in half(takes about three panels) make a box weld together put the door ay one end and cut a panel for the other end and use a piece of plywood for your door and there you go.just take a 2x4 to hold the door up and throw corn at opposite end when the hog roots aroud the 2x4 he will knock it down and the gate slides shut. this trap is portable which helps alot

Don't worry, if you are going to work for the USFWS, like your other post said or more likely the USDA wildlife services, then they will tell you what you can use to trap feral hogs and most likely its going to be one method, cage traps. GOOD LUCK. LOL oh and how did you get a job trapping feral hogs if you never did it before? Do the feds always hire people for the job that never did the work? Just asking an obvious question here, I mean were there not enough qualified applicants or something?

I suppose I should try and defend myself here. First off, they require a college education so that throws a few people out the door. I have a lot of trapping experience, I just fur trapped here in Missouri this past season. I also have extensive field experience collecting a multitude of different data. Also I'm not going to just be feral hog trapping. I'm going to be controlling feral cats, rats, feral chickens, cattle egrets, bull frogs, and mallards.
There is an important scientific component to this position. They wanted someone with a scientific background since I'm going to be around so many endangered species. Dealing with the general public is also an important part to this position.
In a nutshell I was hired because I have a college education, a wide array of experiences, and I've done a lot of trapping. It may not be with feral hogs, that's why I'm on here. I'm not just a college kid that doesn't know his butt from a hole in the ground.
And, if it makes you feel any better I'm not going to starve but I'm not making a killing on this position.

Well, you certainly gave a good answer, and I must say you have the people skills to go along ways in Federal Service, especially when dealing with jerks like me. I hope you do well and give you my regards. Heres a picture of a hog trap I have used. You can see its wire panel construction with a push door that swings shut behind them. Once you catch one, the rest of them will often go in so sometimes it helps to leave one inside all the time, usally a young one which works real well. You can see we use corn as bait usually put some by the door to entice them in and it helps to pre-bait with the door tied open so they can come and go for a day or two to get them interested.

i have snared wild hogs before. most of the bigger hogs will still be alive when you check the snare, so be careful. the smaller hogs will usually die. run those snare early in the morning before it gets hot, because those pigs will die in no time from the heat. they dont have any sweat glands. also, dont ever shoot them in your traps. load them into a trailer, and then dispatch them. use heavy duty swivels made from angle iron and rebar, and use heavy duty washer locks. use 1/8 cable.

Thirsty, I wouldn't last long at your new job... after about 6 months of smoked, BBQ'd, luau, teriyaki, pig pickin' pork, I'd be too fat to do my job anymore! Pigs... chickens... and ducks. Nope, you won't starve. Don't let these guys fool you, you're their new hero! You stayed in school, then went to college, where you built a strong foundation of knowledge and experience... and I'd guess you brought the same confidence and character to your interview that you demonstrated for Latrans. I bet, on top of all that, you're even more handsome than Vinke is! Congratulations, on your new job! Krusty P.S. Send us a report now and then, I know I'm not alone in being interested in what you'll be doing. It sounds like a great adventure!

Thirsty, You're welcome, someone has to offset the gruffness of these guys, now and then. Vinke, is "one of the guys" here, and as you've probably noticed we like to poke a little fun at one another. I hope you don't mind me using you as the pokin' stick. LT, Go easy on the spelling mistakes, there, "proposel" boy! (*From my favorite LT quote... "Spelling is important... someday you might want to write a business proposel." ) I don't have time to search, but holding Vinke up as our spelling bee champ, or chief word smith, is baloney! LOL Krusty

thrstyunderwater Suggest you look at the USDA hog trapping site which has corrals used for hog trapping. You can catch many at a time using this method. .

I spent a few hours with Michael Strebel, Light Hog Trapping, LLC Sarasota, Florida 941-812-8839. This is a video I took earlier today of his Trap design he calls the Pinwheel Hog Trap. His bait corn soaked in water for about three weeks . He throws in some yeast with so it becomes good and fermented and the odor just calls them into the trap. Find more videos like this on WWW.WILDLIFEPRO.NET
