When it is really dry like it has been, I water the runs,( heavy) with a garden hose, just like a row of peas. It will bring the night crawlers in there which in turn will bring in the moles. Easier shown than told. Do you just shove the hose down one of the air holes LT? I did that a couple of times this year in my yard and have nailed several (6) moles in the same tunnel.

It is, if that's how you would water your row of peas. No, I do it from above.

Lt while I'm a newbie to this whole mole trapping thing I've been using 4 dozen of Steve's traps, its a good trap, I've been having a few problems with dig unders, but if I have 2-3 locations setup on each good run, I have the mole. Very easy trap to set and even easier to use, just make sure you bed them tight, than throw a little loose dirt down the tunnel, I stake them with flags and have no problem....B...

Brian, depending on how loose or sandy the soil is its common to have dig unders, but if you take the extra second and bed the trap tighter so the business end is even with the tunnel youll have more success. Its my number one trap but the Victor Out of Sight trap helps as well. good luck

Bud I'm dealing mainly with good loamy black dirt, I've been working them down really hard and its helping, one thing I've found out with these moles is to set heavy, that way if I don't get him here I get him 10' away, I do really like Steve's traps they've paid for themselves in a very short time. I did wax the triggers to make them extra sensitive....B....

I havent had any call to try this yet but have thought about flipping the trap (steves) upside down. has anyone done this yet? My theory is that it would get the bottom of the jaws out of the moles way, and give now reason for it to burrow deeper...

give it a whirl... thats what they suggest for the death clutch for moles is to put it upside down in a surface run.... ive caught 3 moles in death clutches in gopher tunnels this year...

Hey, guys, I missed the last several posts on this thread as I took a week off and went to Mexico, even did some gopher trapping for some avocado growers down there for a few days. I'll post something about that on a new thread.
Gopherkiller, when I was designing the mole size trap, there was a point where I had the jaw spread too narrow, and was having marginal success with the trap. I played around with setting the traps upside down, on the same theory as what you said, that doing it that way would get the jaws of the trap out of the way. At the same time I tested some traps with slightly wider jaw spread, and that really improved the effectiveness of the trap a lot, so I wound up not following up with the idea of setting them upside down. I still think that idea has potential, though. I would think maybe in sandy conditions where the moles really want to dig around my traps, setting them upside down might make a real difference. I'm going to give that a try.

I still havent tried that theory yet but may somtime. The shrew trapping test went pretty well. In two yards I caught about 14 moles and 18 shrews in one week. I had a little sign still going on but needed to get going and pulled everything. I plan to go back and set them up again later if the ground doesn't freeze up first. Steve's trap and the No-Mole trap are the only mole traps that i can catch shrews in.
