Scenario: Several coyotes are trapped successfully in an area for a period of time and then the sets grow cold. Perhaps the coyotes approach close but not close enough OR the darned things don't go near sets at all. What do you do?

I am currently writing an article on ways to address this and will submit to either Fur-Fish-Game or Trapper Predator Caller. (Not sure which one???)

Wondered what you all have up your camo sleeves???

If their coming close and circling the set but won't enter some fake trails and blind sets work out from the suspicious set,if their staying a quarter mile out or better I just move and use different sets that I havn't educated them on already. Not a pro but thats what I do.

Use different lure, bait and urine. Or back off a ways and set trails with some snares. It works for me!

I'd say leave your current sets, find the approach path and put in a very well blended flat set with just a drop or two of urine on the backing (preferably urine you did not us at the other sets).

If you can see the approach tracks to the rejected set ,and they usually take the same path in. Set some flat sets on the approach trail. Now this is going to sound really stupid! Take something (anything)like a empty 2litre bottle of soda and set it off the trail 20yds and about 50-100yds from the rejected set. Set it like you would a scent post set. No lure or urine nothing on it! Blend the sets in really well. They can't resist to check out something out of place. Its something that they don't associate with traps like a post set or dirt hole or other trapping smells & baits! It does work! Sounds stupid but works!!

I'd p.m. Mark June and hear what he had to say! LOL If it were me, I'd do something completely different. Like set type, lure change, urine change, etc. There's lots of different changes one can make.

Blackdog, Have you been sneekin a peek see at my article transcripts? Your getting warm and there are proven methods that are used when coyotes will not commit to standard methods. I think they'll be fair interest in what I outline in the article (working on it right now) and as I always do, I'm referencing the science behind the methodolgy so those interested can look into it further.

Hey, be the waym who read FFG and TPC or one and not the other? I usually send to TPC or even the NTA's AT, but FFG has been after me for a coyote submission, so may go that route. Just wondering??

I believe other members of a family group come to recognize those areas as danger zones and will pull back from those set locations that have taken coyotes from that group. If I'm keeping that section of the line going, I put in new sets with a different attractor some distance away. If I'm moving the line, I consider those coyotes I caught as 'the cream" and keep moving to new coyote groups.

What do you do when coyotes dont visit your sets?

Here in Ms. where I'm at now. Say thanks.

When lived where yotes were decent enough to skin? Snares if I could, blind sets if snaring wasnt an option. One set Ive used with some success is Roy Greenfields hip pocket set.

Make a blind set on the highest spot downwind from the sets. Move sets to a area they are now using to hunt at.

You know, I never really thought about that until now - I watched coyotes this year at least two different times biting and pulling at a deflated bright green kevlar type balloon that I could see from my tree stand. They would trot down the trail and one would always start chewing and pulling on this darned balloon. I went to look at it later and the thing was chewed up as well as an old ball that had washed in from the creek. So.... I would bet that would be a really good "curve ball" type set for trap shy coyotes. I will give that a try next year.
