Nice posts guys I have been learning a lot. I liked those winter sets excpecially because last year was our first year ever and we tried for coyotes and fox and had only one fox come up to the set step on the pan which was frozen pee on the set and then walk away.

That's a tough one. The reason why I liked waxed dirt so well.

We were using the anti freez crystals in the dirt and around the set but it still froze.

I am planning to set this for coyote in the late fall. Curious to see how others would view this spot.

IMO, you have a couple choices for the trap. My first choice would be a flat set out (scent post) out on the end of the log.

That is what I thought also. I was looking to use bait in the hole with or wothout a trap and then use urine or gland lure on the end of the log.

I am hesitant to put a trap in front of the hole for fear that a yote will climb on or over the log and gain some leverage to pull. Could come free or pull the anchor.

I have caught some yotes but was really wondering how some of you real coyote slayers would do it.

Here is another walk through set. I had a conibear style set and a dirt hole about 20 feet from this trail. Took coon, skunk, etc. Made a walk thru with a little cat unine on one side and homemade bait on the other under the grass I pushed up (below the cat)to force the cat over the trap.

stepping sticks on each side of the jaws...trap set with the cat stepping between the jaws not over them. Here is the catch...

Don't over look those trail sets, blind sets work good here also.

Noticed the shine on your trap...strictly a "cat trap" or do you not treat your traps?

There was a coyote already caught here so there was some good smells already, the grass that was torn out by the previous catch I made 2 ridges of "guiding" to keep them to the center. A good soft spot to put the trap in between the 2 ridges and at the center. The picture doesn't show it real well but where the trap is at, that is where the ridges are closest together hence the guiding. I did put a little lure in each of the ridges sort of like a flat set going both ways.
Trap is where the "X" crosses and the 2 circles is where I would hide the lure in the ridge of ripped up grass.
