You can't always use guide sticks at every spot. What I try to do is find the spots that are shallower, like 15" or less and use two or three sticks stuck into the bank above the trap, one being right at water level, the others "stacked" below the top one to the top of the trap. Or what I like to do in deep water is just jam a bush top into the bank above the trap, very easy to do. Don't use big sticks on top however, they may try to climb on it. But again, some places you can't use sticks because the water is too deep or under bridges if they have concrete walls. If you can't find shallow spots to set, don't let that stop you from setting. Like others have said, the set is very effective even without guide sticks. I just think sticks help stack the odds.

I can stop the truck, jump down in the creek set 2 or 3 points on. Run over to the other side of the road set 2 more points and be on my way in 15min. tops. Mink naturally travel on the bottom edge hunting, trying to ambush pray on the other side of the point. There is no need to guide them and force them to dive. You can sometimes run the toe of your boat in the groove thats made by the rats and mink, brushing the edge on the bottom. 95% of my mink sets are bottom edge. The other are trail sets going over roads. All 110s. No smelly bait, no trying to dig pockets, no coons, just clean the rats out and start nailing the mink. I can honestly say buying Kens book and video was the best investment I have ever made trapping wise.

All I can say is bottom edge for mink it truly is an excellent set and since I have started using it my mink boards have been busier. The great thing is it is coon proof! Great for muskrats as well. Like Todd said if you take more than a minute you are doing too much they are quick and easy. No guide sticks needed. OT

To check to see if you got a hit on a deep trap, take a sterofoam shipping peanut and a needle and thread and tie a thread on it. I use 26 guage electronic bus wire and wrap just over the trap jaws but not tied when the trap is set and tie the thread to the center of the short piece of thin wire. Peanut floats, when trap is thrown, peanut will float away by current. You don't see the peanut you got a hit on the trap. That simple.

The best part of the bottom edge set is sitting in my office at work and looking out of the window at sleet, snow, wind and rain and realizing that ALL of my bottom edge sets are operational unless clogged with a rat or mink. For a part time hobby trapper thats a pretty good percentage.

Funny part was the guy who came up with it, made a mink video and then made a "beaver & otter" video but couldn't catch even one otter to put in his video.... \:\) Still a good set though!

He had them in his book though with pics so not that funny really. He made a lot of people happy by coming up with that set. Works great once you figure out where to set them. OT

Thanks

Brett
