Trap is 54 inches long. Was told it originated in Europe and came over to be used as security around forts. Anybody know anything about it?

Yes, it is European. I have heard them called man traps and may have been used as such but most man traps have some method of a lock so that a person could not just be let out.

European yes, man trap no, see the spikes on the pan pointing inward? That's to fix bait to. They used these rather large traps to catch animals by the head or body as they tried to eat the bait. The teeth on top of jaws helped kill and hold such caught animals. Iam thinking wolf size. As for that trap being used to protect old forts in early 1800s I doubt it. Nice story though.
