Hey all...always looking for dumb, stupid, weird attempts people have tried to resolve wildlife problems. I use them in my newsletters to my customers. What are some you have heard or personally came in contact with?

Dryer sheets or moth balls to repel rodents or bats. Strobe light to repel bats. Chewing gum to kill moles. Window screen to exclude coons. Granular rat poison to kill moles. The old, illegal fly bait and soda to kill everything. Fox urine to repel rabbits. Sugar cubes to kill skunks. Gasoline down a chipmunk hole in a porch. And my all time favorite, the lady that called the animal psychic to talk the squirrels into leaving her attic. My area's full of nut cases!

Ive got a video of two idiots pouring water in the walls to flush the bats out. They work for a pest control company. This is after they sealed the bats inside the attic of the apartments. I was called by an apartment complex for the complaining tenant. They went with the cheaper company that ended up costing them more in lawsuits than I quoted to get the bats out. The cheaper company always costs more in the end.

I've seen almost everything imaginable in 27 years of doing this business..... but one of my favorites was a guy trying to solve a beaver problem at a 10-acre lake. He poured 5 gallons of gas onto the lodge (bank-den lodge) and lit it, thinking it would burn the beavers. Of course they all swam out the underwater entries before he even lit it. Burned down about a 3-acre area of the woods before he could get it put out. Funny part: since the lodge was destroyed, the beavers cut down a couple hundred MORE trees and built a new one 50 feet away.

Another good one was a raccoon problem. Guy called me about coons in his attic, and I gave him a price for trapping/removal/repairs. It was a 3-story home, lift required. He didn't like the price, so went on the internet (where everything can be solved) and tried the advice from a bunny-hugger website (animal rights lunatics). He put a pair of high intensity work lights up there. The coons climbed on it, knocked it over, and the entire 3rd story was destroyed by fire. I saw the guy a few weeks later and he told me the story.... and of course I asked how much money he saved by not hiring me.

Can't beat Ron's story (OMG!), but just talked with a lady who was advised to poison the coons in her attic. She wisely rejected this "solution", but I wonder why anybody would want to have a 15-lb. carcass in her attic....

A guy figured urine smell would keep beavers out of his dock.

He proudly walked down from his cottage every morning and took a leak all over his dock.

Didn't get rid of the beavers, but did have fewer dinner guests over for some reason...

Ever see the video of "the Molenator"? Pumps propane into a mole run then ignites it. Check U-toob.

Got a call from this guy that was redoing the roof on his house. It was opened up in one area and coons got in and started living there. i quoted him a price and he said he would try to get them out himself first then he would give me a call. He eventually did call and when i got there he had started tearing up parts of his finished roof trying to get them out. he had gut shot one and it had crawled and died WAY back in there with blood all over the place. not to mention the new hole in his ceiling... what a mess.

I had a lady last year that called me about a raccoon in her heating vent. When I got there the coon was actually just under the vent grate in her bedroom. I kept smelling a slight ammonia smell in the room then she starts telling me about the cup of ammonia she had poured on it's head trying to get it to back out of the 6" heating duct the day before after getting advice on the internet. I have found moth balls to be the #1 DIY remedy for all creatures big and small. laugh

Of all God's creatures, only the honeybee improves the environment and preys on no other species.

WE had one of our guys inspecting for bats. He was in the attic and stepped between the rafters, he landed in the middle of the living room floor, still on his feet. Didn't catch any body parts on protruding nails or anything. A huge hole in the ceiling and expensive! ( no bats )
