Best diy I ever saw was a bug zapper placed and turned on outside their entrance. They'd fly out and hit the thing! It was awesome!

I would get to the nest, kill the queen and get the nest out when the next cold front comes down. Otherwise this spring you will be back at it again.

I use Fipronil mixed up in a small pump up sprayer for the yellow jackets and other around the home pests. Fipronil is not cheap but it does a number on bees and bugs. Set your sprayer for a stream and squirt/soak the YG nest from a distance. Everything in there will be dead in hours. Use the mixture to spray around the foundation of your home also. This is some bad stuff so read the label for mixing instructions and precautions.
