Hello everyone- I have been checking out this forum for a while now, since I got back into trapping last year. I forgot how much fun it was. Of course it has changed some since I was a teen, but one thing hasn't changed- checking my trap line is still like Christmas morning. I also like checking out the old traps on here. My friend showed me a Newhouse advertisement that he picked up when he was out west at an antique store. It looks to be an original advertisement from 1907, and he would like to find out more information on it, primarily if he should insure it, and for how much. I know that some of the ads for hunting/fishing companies can get pretty pricey, and I have had no luck in researching this for him. I'm wondering if anyone has any information, or could point me in the right direction. I have added a picture of the same ad that he has, that I downloaded from ebay. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If it's original and is a poster not a cut out from a magizine he might have something

It's a common reprinted item

I agree with you, and I know that it's a commonly reprinted poster, but I have been collecting for 25+ years (mostly shotgun shell boxes/shipping crates, fishing stuff, decoys, etc.), and if I were a betting man, I would bet that it's genuine. I'm not an expert, and that's why I am asking for help from the 'collective trapping brain'. I like to tell my friend that he has a horseshoe stuck up his ___. because that's the kind of luck he has, so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't a reproduction.

If possible, I would like to see a photo of your friends actual ad. And, where did you get the 1907 date? There are several ads with this image that Oneida Community used. Here are the ones I have. The one you posted has a Victor trap ad on the back of it and is printed on a heavy card stock and is fairly small 5 1/2" X 9 1/4". I am not sure where this is from.

This is a poster, 11" x 15" on heavy paper.

Then it was used as a magazine ad in "Hunter Trader Trapper" in 1912. The inside ads are black and white and the back cover ads are in color.

They are also reproduced.

Thanks for the info, and the pictures. Awesome stuff. I thought he said that it was marked 1907 on it somewhere (or 1904). It seemed to me that the dimensions were a little narrow and tall for a magazine (At least that's what I thought initially when I saw it, which is why I didn't think that it came from a magazine, but I could be completely wrong.). I will be seeing him tomorrow, so I will check it out again, and see if I can post a picture or two of it. It is framed, but I'll see if I can pull it out to see if it is on paper like from a magazine, or if it's a heavier stock. I am toying with the idea of getting it copied without him knowing, and 'accidentally' spill my drink on the switched out print. He would laugh (after he got over his heart attack) cry. Thanks again

Hey snakecollector- I took some pictures of hi ad. The dimensions are 11" x 15". There is no date on it, and when I asked him about the date he gave me, he said that it was the year that the artist was commissioned to do the painting. It is printed on a heavier paper, and in the pictures I took, I tried to show how the printed areas are raised slightly. The picture of the lettering show it pretty good, along with the bear. It looks like it was framed off center from the darker edge around it in places, and the back shows the same type of fading (like something hung over the back- maybe some other type of ad facing in the store?). I can just picture this hanging in an old mom and pop sporting goods store in the early 1900's, along with other ads that we would give our eye teeth for, plastered all over the place. Let me know what you think.

That is an original poster, the same one I have in the frame. They are very collectable and hard to find but they do come up on EBay occasionally. The ones I have seen sell for $60 to $125.

Thanks for the information. I guess he can stop thinking of early retirement.
