Came across these red-bellied snakes while setting up a groundhog job a couple days ago. Hadn't seen any for at least 20 years, and I am an avid snake catcher. Adults only get to be about 10 inches. Really cool snakes.

I haven't seen those for a long time either. They are just another wonder of nature that some of us appreciate. That's great that you took the time to share your pictures with us.

They almost look like a man made artificial snake when you look at their coloring. Their distinctly smaller head to body ratio is a noted feature of that specie.

Our re-bellied snakes get 5 feet long. Beautiful snakes! Might be a different species than yours.

I used to catch a lot of them when I was a kid in MN. I also used to catch some of those little green "Grass Snakes" but I have not seen either kind here for at least 50 years. Then again I am not looking under old boards and tipping over things in old junk yards any more either. Pretty cool little reptiles....thanks for the share!

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

Nice to make a find like that. Have not seen those or many other similar snakes in some time. Guess its partially due to the fact that I'm not out there looking for them like we did as kids with all day to scavenge through the underbrush in search of anything that moved. We did catch similar Ringnecks and DeKay's snakes. Just about everything in our state is now protected, as it should be. Always hate to hear about killing snakes on sight just because they don't like them or are afraid.

I have noticed a dramatic decrease of reptiles and amphibians in the local area over the past 25 years. I haven’t seen a single eastern coachwhip for more than ten years! We do still seem to have a good population of eastern diamondback rattlesnakes, timber rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths though. Gray ratsnakes are plentiful too. Below are a couple of uncommon critters I caught in my yard last year. I hadn’t seen either of these for a few years.

Green Snake- good camouflage

Legless Lizard (Glass Snake)
