I have 110's set on the top rail of a post and rail fence, some snap rat traps w pecans glued to trigger. Second day and no red squirrels. The customer has a built-in pool and patio. 20 foot Spruce and pines enclose his whole backyard with fence behind pines/spruces. The reds are menacing his potted plants around patio and bolting around backyard. The owner says they run the fence and dash across tops of pines.

Any ideas? Never thought reds would be challenging...

Which species of “red squirrel” are you having problems with- red fox squirrel, red pine squirrel, or something different. We don’t have red fox squirrels or pine squirrels around here. Below is a link to one previous discussion on the subject of squirrels. Many more discussions are available. I would not use rat traps on anything larger than a juvenile gray squirrel.

Spruce and pine seeds are probably plentiful right now, if you're using nuts try to use un-shelled nuts. Black walnuts are my preferred bait for them.

In our state the red pine squirrel is very common in pine and spruce areas. We use lured/baited small cages along the travel routes and typically catch consistently.

Red squirrels can be a bit challenging at times. Presentation is key as is location. In that setting those folks will have an on going problem just due to their environment.

Swing panels on the fence. Air rifle too if that's an option. I've had OK luck with peanut butter, whole Kernel corn, sunflower seeds, and one of the fruity baits too - either Jameson's or on target, can't remember.

I've found that DP's baited with dry cat food are very effective for catching red squirrels. They climb inside and get caught across the body.

Ended up with 12 red/pine squirrels. 7 in 110's on top fence rail, 3 in small cage traps and 2 in rat/snap traps.

Thanks for comments
