Some thoughts. Do not put them near anything they can tangle up in. Sheep wool {unwashed} holds bait and is hard to pull out. Only put food in a dog proof. Always work trigger after you bait trap to make sure bait is not jamming trigger. Leave a couple chew sticks for them to play with. A shorter chain can be used if full of swivels A brake rotor can be made to hold a dog proof. Weld a pipe on top to stake thru. A big coon can drag a rotor. So use a small rotor and a stake. Put a swivel "washer" on pipe to attach trap to, with a top stop on pipe to keep washer from pulling off. A lil griz style trap can be depressed with a small oil filter wrench. A five gallon pail with a pair of slide rails bolted to top can be used to relocate. Have a small notch cut to work trap out the hole. As well a small handle can be bolted to bottom. Put pail over animal, sit on pail. Work chain to notch. Slide trap out hole. Release paw. Slide a door into track. Lock door. Turn pail over and you can carry pail by handle

Just some food for thought. If it warrants the use of a DP due to the best option or the only option this can be done.

I take a full sheet of 1/2 plywood 4x8 in size cut in half. Now you have two pieces. Find the center point of each cut piece. Mark and cut out a 3" circle of each piece.

Drill two 1/2" holes on opposite corners of the plywood about 10 inches in from each opposing corner. This is used for your stabilizing stakes to hold the plywood in position.

Stake the DP into the center hole and push the trap leg into the soil for securing the trap into position. Make any adjustments as needed to the chain length to keep the catch on the board surface. Rebar / Rod staking works best as a cable stake can allow more reach at times as it can creep out a few more inches than when first staked.

This will eliminate most if not all damage to the ground and the surrounding area if you position the plywood with reasonable consideration in the placement.

I put some small branches / sticks or a couple of old rags or small towel close to the trap. This will act as a torture toy or an occupying object that will allow the animal to focus a lot of its attention upon the available objects.
