Lots of nuisance beaver calls this season so far. With all the rain we have had lately the calls are coming in every day.Have taken 22 at various locations in the last couple days.
Anyone else see a spike in the nuisance beaver calls this season?

Started out pretty well for a short time, but just stalled. There is a direct correlation between rainfall and beaver complaints in our area. We are in the midst of a semi draught, creeks are low, so beaver calls are infrequent. On wet years the phone rings off the hook and conversely on the dry years, like this one, it is very slow. But, the beaver are still out there and will do a lot of moving around in fall when the rains pick up. Could be a wad of calls to come in at once if we get a rainy fall.

Jim, your area sounds like mine...very wet and lots of work....we've been dry here too though.
Have your coyote numbers been declining at all? Parvo/distemper hit hard here....some attribute those diseases to moist conditions....allows virus to survive easier/longer....not sure.

You guys seem to know a lot about beaver. We never had any up to about twenty years ago and then we had calls all over the map. We were very successful because we were lucky, not good. We are going through our second year in a row without a single beaver call. And to be perfectly honest, I haven't seen any beaver sign in the last two years either. Hey, I'm not complaining, chipmunks are a lot lighter, but is the lack of beaver normal?

Some guys on the main board were talking about a beaver eradication program that has been going on in Wisconsin for quite a few years to improve trout streams.
I don't get that thinking. We have beaver everywhere here and the creeks are just polluted with trout. They spawn in the beaver ponds.

Not here. We are heading into a drought if things don't improve. We need rain and I mean lots of it.Hay fields and gardens are almost lost for the year.I'm hoping things pick up when cooler weather gets here. It's been at 100 for the past fews days.

More than last year at the time for me for sure. I did fifteen all last year. At sixteen now and haven't even really started the year.

Boco, I know they would like to get rid of the beaver on the trout streams up north but that's a long ways from me. No one is doing anything to the beaver down here. What ever is causing this is natural.

Lots of rain this spring/ early summer and lots of Beaver call here too. I have been saving my Timber Companies lots of $$$ on big tracts of timber. There will be a lot lost this year if people don't know they have a problem.
We have the deadly combination of higher than normal temps pushing 100 every day and all the water ways are above normal.

Wisconsin has had a beaver vacuum for a number of years in many areas, by state design, which is kind of sad, not normal. Surprised the animal people don't point it out. Beaver can be a real problem when fur prices drop, so highway departments must be saving, but it is an abnormal environment. Heard the same thing about the trout. It can be difficult to maintain a balance, keep "some" beaver because they are rodents that are very prolific, reproducing quickly. In N.Y they figured they would nearly more than double every three years if left unchecked in the Adirondacks, 100 beaver becoming about 220 and nearly 500 in six years. With milder winters and better feed they double even faster in outlying areas.

Back to precipitation. On one really wet year I got quite a surprise. Clients often ask, "if we trap them will they come right back?" I usually would tell them if we cleaned up the issue we were good for the year, which had, until that time, always been the case. One very wet summer I had two locations that each required trapping 5 times, new pairs moving in over and over again after heavy rains. In-between I would ask, "was there any activity after I trapped." Each time the answer was no. For a period of three to four weeks it would be completely clear, no damming, then start all over again.

Boco, water is everywhere here and so are the beaver. Houses where there were none in the Spring. I will be trapping one 5 mile stretch most of the summer as the county and I work to get a grade back up to usability. Could be a long summer out there.

Super weird that there is nuisance everywhere and yet I hear lots of trappers can't find any during open season! I talked to a guy yesterday saying he just had his quota cut in half! Lots of work on Lake Joe so far though.

You would think that with lack of pressure from fur trappers that the nuisance beaver will be on the rise in the future. I'm seeing it around here already.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!
