I have shot lots of swimming beaver in low light, using the wave pattern to place my shot without actually being able to see the beaver.

I am having trouble mounting a scope to my 22 mag. It needs to be drilled and tapped apparently. Also, most of the rounds I find are super explosive varmint rounds. I sure wouldnt mind a bit more penetration. I tried on carcasses. I can't get an exit in even a kit. Leaves a big entry hole, but no damage PA st an inch or two. Wish I could find bowler partitions in 22mag lol

They use to sell steel jacketed bullets in the 22 mag. They will work well for penetration however they may be more prone to ricochet on water courses. The lead tipped hollow points work fine as well.

22 mag is way better for beaver than a 22 lr.Lots of heavy bone and thick meat on a beavers head.
I have shot a lot of fox too with the 22 mag after squeeking them out of the bush.

Depending on terrain I'd be carrying 22 mag or12 gauge with 000 buckshot. For longer shots with no chance of a ricochet hurting anyone I'd use my scoped 223 or 270. Almost anything will work so really depends on terrain, proximity to people or buildings and what mood I'm in.

I heard the old timers say they use to use 4-10 shoot the beaver in the nose so it cant dive and then use a 22 to finish it off when it comes up on the shore. I don't think that has been done in 40 years but sounds like an effective way of making sure you get your beaver.
