We had this discussion on the wilderness forum and thought I would post this here as well for some that find otter tails a task.
For an excellent tutorial on skinning and fleshing otter by Alaskan Trapper trapperjoeAK click here.

As discussed in the thead above the otter tail presents a little bit of a learning curve.

I stretch the otter out. You can see here that I have used a pair of vice grips and wire to do the deed. By the way if you get the chance everyone should have a pair of vice grips outfitted with a washer on the end for such things. I use it also to hang up lynx toes for final skinning. It comes in handy a lot.

I am a big proponent of skinning tight hides. Using the wire and hook on the mid section helps a lot.

It skins real clean and I skin it all the way around from one side. A bit of trimming is needed on the second edge and the end of the tail but it is my prefered method.

Very usefull info - thanks.

(Len, you need to make up a step where you incorporate the use of the spark plug shown in the second pic - lol)

He could thread it in to any close-by orifice, but what if it fires?

Well otter tails are very simple ALLWAYS start from the tip end and go to the vent. It's much eaiser to controll your knife cut with this method.
No need to clean skin out the entire tail as shown just open up the edges untill you break through around the center of the tail run your hand through and pull the hide off the tail. very simple and you don't need any extra equipment.
Family trapper Is clean skinning the tail I find It much quicker and eaiser to use my necker to flesh out the tail.

I'm still waiting for my Video

"Hook Blades" in a construction type knife work very well for the "first" cuts...............And I thought I was the only one using a "sheep skinner"

Beav how about I just send you down my video camera and you can shoot a new episode. You should be faster by now. ;0) The boxes are still piled high in the basement. No telling how long.

I pull them too when skinning on the line but I don't like fleshing them as much as skinning them. I can control a knife a lot better than a Sheffield.

A guy can get some odd things collecting on the skinning table.
