Wow so many questions - this swamp was set up with ten poles and two traps per pole -mostly to keep one trap working if the other missed a rat. It is rare for me to double on rats on one pole - it seems the dead rat scares the others away - anybody else have an opinion on that? Triggers are baited with carrots & corn mostly but would like to try potato like others have posted.
I do not have the time to go hard core like others - this is just a part-time fun little line to keep me out of trouble. Wisconsin does not have a trap check limit on sets under the ice so i check these about once a week and average around five rats per check.
As you can see the holes are over cut in size so i don't saw the rat in half or as "Wisker" points out ruin the saw blade. As far as locating sets - three per den is my rule of thumb. If your lucky and the ice is clear (i wasn't) under ice feeding areas and runs without bait are very effective.
Personally i prefer open water rat trapping but you can't fight mother nature. I'll post a few more pictures Friday.
