What do you guys carry around with you? Ive received alarmed looks when I've used trowels to open cantaloupes. I suppose all they see is the flash of metal and think machete. I'm thinking 3 or 4" long blade that is thick enough to be used to do all the odd prying, etc that happens day to day.

Great question Eaten! For the last couple of years I always have an 8 ft. tape and a 4 inch Gerber big blade on me. I use them all

the time which means I got smart 50 years too late.

These are a good knife. You can get a leather sheath on ebay.

I don't have a number for that. I'm generally a buy quality person, but don't want to spend stupid money for a knife that will be beat on as a general rule. I want to be able to trust it and have it comfortably fit in my hand.

Yesterday I was looking at a fixed blade utility knife that was my Grandfathers that I was using to cut sheet foam and started thinking, "gee, I wish they still sold these things." It had a nice tapered blade with a flat back, fairly comfortable handle, fit in my minimag sheath, etc.

I figured I'd ask what you guys used.

Leatherman Core, I use it just about everyday, has two 3 inch blades, not a bad tool for 75$. Not sure what the price is now on them.

I carry a Benchmade. It was given to me prior to a deployment or I may not have paid 150 for it. But now that I know how durable it is and sharp it remains, I'd buy one. It a folding version with a pocket clip to keep it handy.

I was watching reviews on Amazon and they were mentioning hardness levels at or just below those of my chisels. This surprised me. I'd expect a working knife to be softer to resist snapping and make touch ups easier/faster.

I am a Leatherman Wave man myself. I have carried and used one for more years then I can remember. I use mine for something daily multiple times I would safely say.

I have used, abused and have had some replaced over the years. There are many choices out there. Comes down to whether you are a Ford, Chevy , Dodge or Toyota guy. Take your pick. They all get the job done.

Have had a Leatherman super tool from first year they came out, it really is a tough tool. Lost one but never broke one.

Amen. My father gave me one when I was 12. I still have it and use it often. I'm afraid to bend/break the tip so refrain from prying with it.

Broke the tip on a Buck 110, ground it back to a point. Then found out they have a life time guarantee. Sent it in and they replaced the blade and make the knife look new. The letter they sent with the returned knife said if you break a Buck knife don't try to repair yourself by grinding. Just sent it to us broken we repair or replace.

That's about the best news I've had since I found out I didn't have an STD in 1997! And that was good news!

I didn't know that the buck 110 had a life time guarantee, i snapped the point off mine [probably wrong tool for the wrong job, i seem to remember something about floorboards and something dead], i do have another but the one i broke had the nice finger grips, only problem is i bought it at Bass Pro Vaughn ontario so i don't know how to sort it out.
