There are several different types of tools you can use to set 330's.

This is a setting tongs - 21 inches long.

I bought one made by Sleepy Creek this year. It's aluminum and weighs nothing compared to the steel ones and works great!

I used to use rope until this weekend.. placed an order for an actual trap setter as soon as I got home... The rope kept getting caught in the spring section where the eye meets the body of the trap. Even with the rope I was wore out after setting it 10 different times.

I drill a hole on one side of my tongs and add a loop of 3/32 cable so when i get so far, i can flip the loop over and it will hold the tongs closed, makes it easy to put on the safetys that way.

I made one from 1/4 inch rod . Bend it to form a handle on one end and meaure the length you want and bend it to put a hook on the other end . I can make this setter in 10 mins . Very cheap and works fine . Light weight to carry on the trap line . Fits all conibears . I just use on the 220 ,280 ,and the 330's

Keep it simple and
If it aint broke don't fix it

Either way you go, at least LEARN the rope method and keep a rope in your pocket.

The rope can be used one handed. If you ever get caught, you can get yourself out. There was a guy up in alaska couple of years ago I believe that got caught in one by one arm and couldn't reach the setters on his snowmobile.........

And ALWAYS use safeties.

My holding pen is flat....And made of basswood....

I agree on the safety rope-even with some of the smaller traps... 1 arm caught 5' up in a tree sounds funny but squirrelling your foot for the setters in your trap basket in a snowstorm wiped my humor quick-I had been told by a trapper to always carry that and a couple ice picks on a rope when on ice trapping beaver. I ignored both once-not any more!

*Great idea with the loop of cable to hold the setters closed-with strong 330's its a juggle flipping safeties and holding it all together.

*edit-and use a safety even w/traps smaller than 330's

It's funny how people like different things. I purchased a scissor type setter last year, bent the arms after about 3 uses, cut them apart for scrap, and went back to using rope. Couldn't be much easier than using the rope method, so I don't know why I even tried. Discussions like this I guess.

Nowadays it just don't pay to be a good 'ol boy.

Dont know if you can make it out ,But the red setters have a nail that is bent with a spring on it and then another rod sticking up on the other side so when you close it they lock so you can use both your hands to put the safty on.I'll take some better pics tomorrow if anybody wants.

DBLjaw, my hero, sent me a pair of gem setters.

I'm a feeble petite little woman who had her right arm mangled in an accident in May, and it still hurts sometimes.

I was able to set 330s with the gem setter. Me loves it!

This is a close up of Hunter's setters. I bought a pair of these last year from a dealer in Maine. They are heavy duty, well designed and have a locking mechanism. I used a rope for 30+ years until age and arthritis teamed up.
