Just got my second adc call. Skunks in a business complex. I can only use cages and don't have a spray proof trap. What is the best way to minimize spraying

I do not own any spray proof traps. I haven't had any issues with skunks spraying. I would not set traps in high traffic areas if possible. When removing the skunk approach slowly and hold a blanket in front of you.

Cover the traps when you set them, not after you catch the skunk.

I just walk up to trap with black table cloth and slowly cover it, then use bungy cord to secure it around it to hold it. And load up.

I set my traps in a contractor bag. People don't see anything more than a black bag and don't screw with it. It keeps a calm skunk and better smelling kids who would throw sticks and stuff at it if they knew there was a skunk in the trap.

Good idea.
There are stray cats in the area. What do you all recommend as bait and lure? I have bananas, skunk essence and other skunky lures. What's a contractors bag?

Make your own custom trap covers out of laminated corrugated cardboard (think political/election time signs!).

Like that idea aggie. I don't have any off hand but was thinking of using white trash bag. The guy wants me to go tomorrow afternoon my funds are limited at the moment.

I got rolls of plastic that I use for irrigation pipe, works pretty good for covering cages with.

You don't have to cover first, but it surely works better that way. A solid cover pretty much stops spraying. I use a cover that is a multipurpose cover, solid with a flap on the end so that is can do it all. Works as a skunk cover to stop spraying, bait cover to keep bait out of the weather and just as important, a nose cone for positive sets. With the end flap of cage wire the nose cone / skunk cover also can be use used for den entrances under buildings and for free standing den holes in a yard or field. Rather than have separate tools for each, nice to have one tool to do it all.

also covering allows you to get the trap in tight places where the trap is out of sight out of mind. covered traps in tight places can be handled with no spray. uncovered traps in tight place means spray LOL

Is it just my imagination or is it easier to get a skunk to go into a covered wire cage than it is to get him in a Plastic Catch?
