We are seeing people (foreigners) coming from large towns and actually camping in the woods to dig Ginseng and other medicinal plants. I heard a rumor that Illinois may shut their season down in 5 years if this keeps up. Two of my brother's patches have already disappeared. When they come through they dig every last little plant.
Anyone seeing this in their area?

What good will shutting the season down do? A black market will develop and then the poachers won't even have to compete with the honest diggers once the season comes in.

The only way to stop the poaching is to make the penalties stiff. Until that is done, (and it won't be) crime pays. Get caught digging before season and get a couple hundred dollar fine. BIG DEAL!!! Just go back out and poach some more and the fine will be covered in a couple days. Having seaons only keeps the honest man out of the woods. It doesn't stop the poachers and it won't until the fear of getting caught outweighs the rewards of poaching.

Yeah- I feet the same way but have a job where I work a lot and can't fend off thieves. I'm thinking of digging all my older plants and selling them off this fall. Illinois is a funny state when it comes to letting people do things (even on your own land)and you are right - $200.00 fine is made up the next day in the woods.

My Grand dad had a patch of ginseng that was being stolen and he tried; but could not catch the thief. I had a friend that had a 12-14 foot python. This friend had given me a shed skin and I gave this skin to papaw. He put this skin in the trail that was being used to get to his ginseng. Apparently this guy was not very bright; because, the next week his picture was in the county paper with big snakeskin he found in the woods.

amen on the poachers I have all but quit diggining roots all together. Sorry to say it will continue as long as they keep blasting the price of ginseng in every magazine you find I seen a add in a womens day magazine the other day while sitting in a hospital waiting room stating a inflated price to get peoples attention!Ibelieve it was something like 1100.00$ a l.b! That's B.S when stuff like that is printed they should be sued for false advertising. And then sued again for being morons! I wonder how meny spots that I have planted sang at have been found it was twenty years ago? I know one of my areas hasn't been as of last year. remember loose lips sink ships
