I got a groundhog to trap and I have never trapped one. I have been reading through the archives and other post about trapping them and the positive set is mentioned off and on but not in detail. from what I've gathered im thinking its a 2 door cage with a nose cone over the hole is that correct or am I missing something?? thank in advance for the help.

Two door cage with or without nose cone is normally best used. Some traps are made with up to 6 ways(directions) to catch the animal with features the way the trap is made as well as the way the cone may be fitted.

Blocking of debris, sticks, boards, rocks, or other material may be used.

A single door trap may be set up to the whole but only allows entry from one direction.

Type of trigger as well as trigger used is important. There are many designs.

I just had a thread the other day on "Single door vs. double door for chucks, lucky 13," a page back on Tman, which shows by example how well double door traps work. Trapped for a 36 day period to take 6 chucks, no maintenance, only one possum, catch animals coming and going like a conibear. A double door trap with a connection to den entrance of your choosing will do the trick.

There are lots of ways to catch a groundhog. Using the equipment that you have if you have any would be where I would start. Depending upon the conditions and consideration to pets is another criteria one should consider.

A conibear over the hole, a baited or non baited cage trap of the proper size or a double door forced set up or a nose cone or dig out the den entry to accept the mouth of your single door cage trap then block the mouth of the hole leaving only the trap opening as the entry option.

So you have several options giving what you have to work with and the equipment that you have. Hogs aren't difficult to catch if they are occupying the burrow. Setting an active burrow late in the day and knowing it is the only den in the network will produce results quickly. If it is a hog that is a transient animal it may take a while to catch it on the return visit to that particular den set up.

The only chuck you will not catch right away is the one that isn't there. The transients require patience and it still does not necessarily mean they will return, but very often they do even after weeks. The nice thing about a positive set with double doors or conibears, you know he has not been back to the den if you don't connect.

What everybody else said. If it is a baited set I would use Jamesons formula one or two with a silk flower from walmart or where ever. If you want to save money the garbage of a local cemetary. I know cemetary is misspelled but I have tried every thing I could think of and it still has a red line under it.

Right click under the red line and it will give you the correct spelling most times smile

There are times that the computer is wrong. It can't spell Comstock, raccoons, or Winkelmann. Those are three very important examples.
