If I get cages with 1/2" x 1" wire is it a good idea to go ahead and get the 12 gauge wire or is it just extra weight?

Oh excuse me. I thought the question was 12 gauge shotgun versus 14 gauge wire.

Some guys stick with 14 and a few prefer 12 because they can abuse the traps without worry. Never have heard of any issues with 14 in half by one. You don't have to be careful with 14 gage, but if they get really banged around there could be a dent or two, which still could be popped out.. Any normal use 14 is fine. Animals won't hurt any of it. You will probably notice the extra weight, not terrible, but different. For anyone who wants a trap just about indestructible, 12 is it.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've taken care of a few skunks in my yard with a 12 gauge but don't remember using it on coon. 12 gauge is the original no skunk spray method if you are close and they are unalarmed.

What a great idea for a story! I'm going to write about odorless skunk shooting for The Weekly World News.
