Had a weird thing happen today. I went to check my vole traps and saw a very large one on my trap. It was dead laying on the trap. I had 2 mouse traps sitting back to back and both were sprung. The vole was larger than the mouse trap.

So what killed it?

I've had a lot of empty, but sprung vole traps this year. I figured they had pulled out or something pulled them out, the stake let the trap move... but now I'm wondering if they were über voles and wandered off with internal injuries only to die somewhere else.

I'm going to go with "Hit in the head by two mouse traps."

I agree with the "hit in the head" theory. I once caught a snowshoe hare in a mouse trap. It was hit in the head and lying beside the trap. You might try replacing the empty, sprung mouse traps with rat traps.

actually a very sharp hit to the nose at the right place can cause cranial damage or a clot leading to a stroke. Both incidents can be fatal.

I firmly believe that the exact thing happened on a recent raccoon job. The Conibear was sprung and empty and the raccoon was found

dead just inside the attic two days later.

I think I'd be afraid of a child getting their hand in the trap.

I wish there was a more powerful mouse trap for the voles though. I wish I could just put another wind on a regular mouse trap.

Place a couple of coins or washers under the spring ends where they contact the wooden base. That will increase the spring tension a little.

Note to self- Engage brain before opening mouth (or hitting the ENTER key/SUBMIT button).

What do you cover your vole traps with?

I drill a hole on the opposite end of the trigger and put a nail through the hole to help hold the trap from jumping. JMO

Already had the nail. Maybe I need a larger one.
