Had a request to solve the problem of a coon toilet on a roof. No den location anywhere on/in the home. Several large trees in the yard, but no obvious dens in sight. Any suggestions to influence the raccoon ( believe it to be a lone coon ) to move his restroom? Offered client relocation services, but they asked me to explore other options.

How did they see it up on the roof? The normal roofs here would hide them fairly well.

I think I'd start by trimming back the trees close to the house. If easy access is removed maybe he'll decide to use the neighbor's roof instead.

Thats a tough one even with tree trimming if the coon wants up there they are going to. I have had this request in the past. Ended up leaving the coon alone as they didn't want trapping. It is odd they pick out one roof to go on and no other apparent damage in the area. I think it may have to due with territory marking but not exactly sure on that end of it.

Around here you'd have to remove the downspouts too. Raccoons use roofs as toilets an awful lot. I think they go from roof to roof

testing them out. Then they pick the roof where the people don't want them trapped. I don't know what raccoons find so exciting about

crapping on a roof. No newspapers, no TV, and no toilet paper.

Mrs. discovered the toilet, right outside her sewing room window.
One scrubby box elder on the end of the garage gives direct path to the roof, still a ways from toilet area.
Rest of the trees in the yard would require a significant "drop" to access.
No sign of climbing on the downspouts or other areas of the home.
One of the things I enjoy most about this business, the things that make you go "huh".
Thanks for all of your input.

If a coon wants to get in bad enough, my guess is they would go through a concrete wall to do it. I doubt you could keep them out unless you caught them in the act of trying to get in.

Why would anybody plant a box elder, much less beside a house?

Believe it or not, making that box elder unclimbable by a barrier or slippery sheet metal on the trunk will probably solve the

problem but how much fun is that? Animals that I have encountered are actually lazier than most people. Of course a lot of animals

get the equivalent of food stamps in the form of handouts from the goofy wildlife feeders. Animals can get fat, lazy, and jobless too.

Box elder tree is on neighbor's side of the fence and overhangs the garage roof.
Doesn't show signs of climbing on it, but is a possibility.
Could offer to trim it back/cut it down, but that will be between neighbors.
Sheet metal barrier also a possibility.

The quick answer is that most plant themselves.

Getting into more detail, Box Elder (Acer negundo) trees are pretty darn useful. Make syrup from the sap or drink it straight. Eat the new leaves, inner bark and seeds. There is a type of edible oyster mushroom (Hypsizygus ulmarius - also known as Pleurotus ulmarius) that likes to grow on them. Make cordage (twine, rope, etc) from the inner bark. Weave the inner bark to make bags or wood splints for baskets. Make excellent char (think charcloth for Flint and Steel (aka F&S) fire ignition) from the inner bark or punkwood. The punkwood of Box Elder trees is one of only three punkwoods that in its uncharred state has caught a spark from F&S for me so far. It is possible to make all parts of a friction fire bow drill set from a single Box Elder tree. Fairly light yet strong wood that carves and burns well. Of course objects made from the wood of Box Elder trees need to be cared for. On the tree the wood rots more quickly than most. Many native tribes used the wood for musical instruments. The native range of Box Elders was about half of the United States. People have planted them everywhere so they can now be found from Canada to Mexico, roughly triple their former range. The gorgeous greening up of last years branches is another sure indicator that Spring is right around the corner and one that I personally look forward to each year. Heck, they're also easy and fun to climb. None of which is surprising knowing it is in the Maple family. All in all, Box Elders are awesome trees.

I dunno, why would anyone want a Box Elder tree??   grin

I have a better question; Why would anyone plant any leaf bearing tree? I have never seen a pine needle on my garage floor but then,

of course, I wouldn't be able to see them anyway because of all the dang leaves that blow in.

You might be on to something there. Only conifers in my yard yet I rake mounds of leaves every autumn because all of my neighbors have maples. *sigh*

found coon poop on top of grain bins. I guess they can climb ladders pretty well.

You need to come to my house then. I have a row of pine trees by the house. Every time the wind blows, we get loads in the house. I can sweep the side walk and we still track them in.

I'm glad you posted that Jim. We had our yard done by a landscape architect who happens to be a shirttail relative. I never knew

there were that many different kinds of evergreens. Apparently she knew what she was doing because the whole front of the house is a

solid variety of different ones and we've never tracked in so much as a needle. Maybe I can learn how to post a picture some day.
