I wondered if I would get any responses...have a guy here that advertises trapping shrews because of their damage in a lawn...in 12 years of trapping moles in lawns I have yet to find shrew damage to a lawn...

He could be doing what I do advertise animals we do not have in the area because customers will think that animal is causing the damage. Could be just another way to get mole/vole jobs. Only issue I have seen with shrews is piles of poop in basements.

Shrews patrol mole tunnels for food and canopy shelter while hunting and utilize ground surface cut vole routes as well as entering and scouting vole burrows for food sources and harborage.

They are often residential invaders but as far as doing any damage real themselves I don't believe they do much. They are great opportunists by nature and do to their size make use of what is available in their territories by taking advantage of what other wildlife provides for them.

Just my observational 2 cents.

As far as "shrew damage" I don't encounter anything but I do encounter "the presence of shrews" and their dime sized holes in many lawns with vole activity. I catch shrews on just about every vole job. I usually get calls when people are doing their Spring cleanups and working in their flower beds or changing the mulch out. I don't target these but I do provide info on my website to help a prospect identify them. As stated on my site "Trapping and a bit of habitat modification can generally rid your lawn of these pests if they ever reach an unacceptable level. This includes removing old logs, brush, leaves, boards, rocks and other items from shady, damp areas that insects are drawn to and keeping your lawn cut short in areas of high activity." I would never try to sell a shrew job but I would do the cleanup for the right price as some folks are afraid of what they may encounter (generally a snake). grin

Joshua, you're supposed to vacation in the winter. This time of the year is considered spring even if it doesn't feel like it.
