I like to use one way doors and a collector attached at a chew in. A simple positive set I have watched squirrels run back and forth and bang his noggin on the one way door, sooner or later the door flexes enough that it must spring up a bit and this is all the tree rat needs to escape. Naturally I started putting springs on the doors. I have had nosy neighbors com to the job and say that a squirrel sat at the door and worked away for a few hours and was eventually successful at prying the door up . I think that as long as the squirrel is alive he will work relentlessly to escape the cage.
Any quick fixes out there ?

thanks Bob

Lol you could put a glue board on the inside
Of the collector, he won't have his feet to work
With.

There was a thread on here a few weeks ago where someone had installed a nose bump or jump wall inside the trap. It was about an inch high on the other side of the one way door so that the animal approaching from the collector side wouldn't have access to the bottom of the one way door without standing on it. Haven't implemented it myself but sounded genius and I think it would solve your problem.

We are able to add another piece that has a door on it to practically all of our repeating cages. ( Imagine two repeating cages

connected to each other ) I'm not sure that we've ever lost a squirrel with this set-up. ( Even if a raccoon comes along and pulls

the whole thing apart and eats the squirrel, you can still charge for the squirrel, plus now you have a raccoon to catch )

Thanks Bisma. I read the thread with the nose bump. It left me slightly confused. Not exactly sure how it is installed or works.

Thanks Paul I was kinda toying around with the idea of two doors. I expect that it will work.

I suspect that my old colony traps for rats were a little too flimsy for squirrels.Especially the door. A rat has a short period of time to figure things out, while a squirrel could have 24 hrs.

Also I think that the one way door portion should be very small almost a squeeze through. The least amount of work room the better ( or not )just a guess.

thanks Bob

Just for kicks I checked out our squirrel colony cages. They are 6, 5, and 4 inches. The inserts are 1 inch less and the outserts ( I

made that name up. Pretty cool, huh? ) are 1 1/2 inch more.

I may be misunderstanding the problem but if not, look at the post by Bob Jameson a few posts down. Is this what you need?

Jason I checked a few post from mr. Jameson. I don't think I accessed the one mentioned. I'm pretty clear on everything except the nose bump. Thanks for the help.

The "Nose Bump" or what I call a "Jump Wall" is just a one inch piece of wire mesh attached just past the end of the "door". There is no spring to keep door closed, so the NB was installed. You can see it just below this squirrel's back foot. Just enough for him to jump over and land back on top of the door. Has worked great for me, for grays, reds and flyers.

I've had the occassional squirrel manage to get out. Good luck getting that one back in! That Nose Bump/Jump Wall is pure genius. I'll be trying that out this year. Thanks guys!
