Disclaimer: I don't know if any of this true except the end. At yesterday's WWCOA seminar there was a cage that Tomahawk was

displaying that had supposedly been at least partially invented by NWCOA. ( Charles Holt, I guess ) Okay, the rest of this is

true: The cage is 10x10x32 and the door is flush, not over hanging. It has an over-sized pan that is set further back than

normal. The wire is 1/2 x 1 inch and the last 8 inches have a permanent metal cover. It has a double floor with a slide-out

poop and pee tray that covers the entire width and length. It is powder coated and also has welded bars on the bottom for

staking or screwing to roofs. The normal Safeguard weighs about 10 lbs. the normal Tomahawk about 14. The NWCOA Special weighs

close to 20. The reason I own it is because it was the most expensive prize in the raffle and because I am such a great NWCOA

supporter, I naturally won it!

sounds like a good trap, I like the ability to attach to a roof. They should put a bracket on for remote trap sensor.... (And maybe a lazer beam). Is the model available for sale yet? Other than the roof fastening mechanism, what do you think the benefits are over say a dura poly trap?

Nothing on availability or even if it's going into production. Maybe this post will answer some of those questions.

Paul,

I know even less about this than you but apparently it was "unveiled" at the Expo and is available for purchase. I don't know if you need to be a NWCOA member or not but I heard the price is going to be around $100.

Yeah, I didn't expect it to be less than $100. Lots more work to make than a regular cage. I'm not sure that pictures would show a

whole lot but I guess I can try.

It sounds like a good trap, I'm just so so sure I would really want the per tray. In some scenarios I guess, but I won't be reaching for it on the daily

Yeah, it's not like our vehicles don't stink enough already. I'm not sure that every iota of urine and excrement needs to be taken

home with me. Maybe the fact that I won it, wasn't an accident at all.

There have been some pictures posted on Facebook of the trap. It looks like a Tomahawk 108SS that has been raised to accommodate the "drip" pan, and the door has been moved back to make it flush mount. The 4 "holders" appear to accommodate screws/washers or thin tent pegs but won't work with standard trapping stakes and the bait area behind the treadle appears to be covered by a thin metal on the sides and top, but not the back or underneath. Also, the trap is powder coated.

From what was posted, NWCOA receives a portion of each sale so it probably is available to non members as well as members but so far it isn't up on either the Tomahawk or WCS sites.

I sent a picture to Ron because I don't know how to post one on here. I paid $20 for six raffle tickets and also won a book about

beaver trapping. The money goes to WWCOA so I wish NWCOA luck in trying to collect their share.

Mr. Winkelmann,

Congrats again on winning the prototype trap at the WWCOA conference. It was great to see you and I'm sorry we didn't get more time to talk face to face. I thought it was a great meeting and in my opinion you brought up some great points about the Coyote issues our state. As a father of two small children and owner of two dogs it is always a concern in the back of my mind when they are outside. Especially since our neighborhood is surrounded by thousands of acres of woods. This is definitely my favorite conference to attend because I get to sit in and actually learn and participate. Having the meeting at the Kalahari helps too! I get to bring my family along and they have a great time in the water park. Hopefully we can plan something out and get together next year at the conference if not before then.

To answer some of the above questions and comments about the new trap:

The trap is not yet available online but you can order it direct now for an introductory price of 99.50. The model number is 1010SS. We have not completed a bill of material and time study on it yet to determine the final price but my best guess based on other traps is that it will be around 130.00.
The "waste tray" is made from galvanized sheet metal, held in with roll hooks and is removable for cleaning.
For each one sold NWCOA will get 5% of our gross sales price.
All input for designing the trap came directly from NWCOA members. There were many ideas for extra features but the three most common features desired were a removable clean out, roof attachment and protected bait area. The trap was unveiled at the NWCOA annual meeting earlier this month and it was well received. With more input and NWCOA approval it can definitely be modified in the future. Different versions of the trap may also be available with rear sliding doors or two trap doors.

Thanks Kyle. I guess my only qualms about this cage is the animals having to step up an inch to get in the cage and the stability of

the bottom of the cage hanging over the waste tray. But we shall see, once I get it set for something. But again global warming seems

to have avoided our state.

It sure seems so this week! High of 0 today and tomorrow's high is predicted to be -6. I guess that Groundhog knows his weather. A note for the prototype trap you received is that the bottom tray has a flaw. On the prototype version the roll hooks on the sides of the trap are pretty much worthless because they do not loosen easy enough without putting too much effort in it and possibly damaging the tray. The roll hooks on the ends of the trap are sufficient to hold the tray in the trap and can be easily loosened with a pliers. The roll hooks on the sides of the trap can be cut off and discarded.

Thanks again Kyle. Charles Holt sent my son an E-mail ( which he forwarded to me ) explaining more about the cage. I appreciate all

the help and if it ever gets warm enough to set a cage, I will try to keep everyone informed of my findings.

I did have it set on the floor in this office but I couldn't persuade the grandkids to crawl in it. I had two teeth yanked and a bone

graft done yesterday. They used the bone of a Tasmanian Devil so I was crabby all day. ( Thanks God, for the Vicodin )
