I am new to collecting and only have a few old relics. I always have my eyes open at garage sales, auctions etc. So for a new person starting out can we start a list of some of the "collector" traps that might have value (pics. would help) vrs. old traps with little value because they are so common. I also realize that condition means everything but I do not want to pass up a $8.00 #1 that looks rough when it could be worth more. Thank you Rick

Triumphs are great collectables that don't cost an arm and a leg.
They quit production in the 30s, so they all are at least 80yrs old.
The way the pans are "pinched" on make them easy to recognize.
Half the fun is hunting the old traps down. No way could I
walk away from your $5 deal.

I just found 2 traps but did not pull the trigger until I find out more info, ( I know I need a good book and I think my kids are getting me one for x-mas) so please help on these Both are victors #4 DLS
#1> looks brand new, cast jaws pan is 100% clean and clear. Jaws are tapered so they only let the springs go so far It has a pat. may 28 11 they are asking 40 bucks
#2 >Different cast jaws that allow the springs to go up all the way, chain is single link almost forged, the pan is about 50% readable (victor #4 but there is no "V" stamped through the pan asking 60bucks
Is either one worth anything #1 would make a nice wall hanger if nothing else

Based on what you've written, both of those traps are way over priced. Even half price might be too much.

Obviously pictures would be very helpful. But that might not be possible.

There are 2 good books that you will find helpful. The Steel Trap in North America by Richard Gerstell and The Trap Collectors Price Guide by Andreski &Parr. The paid will cost you about $100.00 but it will be money well spent.

As far as brands go - some common older brands that shouldnt cost you an arm and a leg

Triumph
Diamond
Gibbs
And of course Newhouse.

Always investigate any trap that has a solid pan. Some might be old.

Good Luck and have fun.

That solid pan may be on it's individual post as opposed to the
humped frame. That would make it pre-1910, I think.(I don't
have my book here.)

The solid pan trap may be something special. Will need more details or pictures to know for sure.

As the previous poster said, there are victor # 4 double longs with solid pans.
