I just purchased some stock #4 victor dbls. I'm wanting to upgrade the chain and the hookup. I want to keep it connected to the spring and was wondering if anyone knew a good way of doing this?

Couple thoughts come to mind. You can take the trap apart, remove the old attachment, and slip a D ring in it's place, use your choice of attachment to put the chain on. I'd still put a swivel right at the trap. Personally I like the original piece as it already swivels, but I put most traps on a long chain on a drag...in the brush...in the snow...so most critters don't get that much pull. Down there you might have trouble with a big yote staked on a short chain, but I don't know.

I like talking about long springs....

On page 4 of this thread, there's a picture of some old Victor 3Ns. You might could fabricate yourself that attachment. Take some rod or a big enough nail, bend it to shape to fit around the spring, weld a the right size nut in between the ends, and put a J hook through the nut. Similar to a sterling style swivel.

Going to review this whole thread now. Lots of good stuff.

Given the design and mechanics of the dbl longs, do weaker springs effect holding power or just the speed at which the jaws close?

I have used the KB Teardrop rings on longsprings as replacement clevis. Just run the J-hook thru the end of teardrop ring and you have a double swivel at the end of the spring.

If a good trap company here in the US made a #3 or #4 double longspring trap, they would sell all that they made!

Anybody know what the inside jaw spread is on the old victor #4 DLS?

Hey Grey, I believe the spread is 6 1/4", and the weak springs is more of a speed thing than lock up. It would take some pretty dang weak springs to affect the locking. Take it easy.

VERY good advice by Seth Doty. Don't be careless setting traps, and especially large traps.

Thanks Kevin. Wanted to make sure they were legal in Pa. I figured the springs would have to be really wore out to affect the lockup and holding power also.

Love the Victor #4 dls and especially factory offset. Also the #3Ns without changing in any way. Nothing wrong in doing things to them that you like either, great traps to me.
