Us stamped, stamped 289-1 and 289-2 on jaws.
Drag, chain, swivels all look like they came with it.

Always in the market for Victor 3Ns and Newhouse 3s (ATC preferred).

Okay, I would say that a #3N in good condition would be worth $15-20 and the extra chain and drag would add about the same. So, I would put a value of around $30 to $40 for you trap.

I'm hoping some one will have some info on the jaw stamping. Looks to be factory or professionally done. Not trapper done.

There has to be some one on here that can enlighten the rest of us.

Yes ma'am almost looks like they were part of the casting.

As you Know I've been on a 3N kick lately and haven't seen any with this type of stamping,
nor can I find any info on it.

Good trap with a plain US base stamp(all I can read, is that correct?) about 30, two extension chains, links appear factory done, 20 more, the link connecting the drag does NOT appear factory. If the drag was also connected with a factory link, with the two extensions and the US stamped base I would value it at 75-100 and suggest that it was quite rare, although likely the original order was fairly large. Few would have been left intact. The mold marks on the inside of the jaws suggest left and right hand jaws to me and may be directions for installation, or perhaps not even that and may merely be a way to identify which mold produced which jaw.

Well I agree that s-hook looks like it doesn't belong, but I contacted an old Govt. Buddy of mine and his words were: " is it a big lopsided s hook that looks like it came off a porch swing?"

I said yes, and he said that's the way they came.

I then pulled out my old "government coyote catching guide" book, can't remember what it's called, and it has a diagram with a drag just like that and the big dumb hook.

I really feel that this trap may be a rather special 3N. I would like to sell it, just want to be fair to myself and the buyer.

That Is a Mighty fine trap you got there.I never seen one rigged like that but I did have several of them myself rigged several different ways. From just the chain with the trace swivels to with a dog knot stake to two on one drag ,had two pair like that ,and both sets had that cheezy lookin "S" hook connecting the chains to the drag, and they had real good lookin drags on them. But I gotta say " THAT rig you got is the best lookin one I ever saw."Except that S hook" I don't like them at all.I hada coyote twist one open once and get away with my trap,It would have been my first one.that was many years ago. Some guy I did not know found it, and tried to sell it to a guy I did know ,he told him No I know the guy It belongs to,and I ain't gonna do it.Thats when I learned the importance of swivels at every connection on a trap chain. I dont splice any other way.period... I would keep that one and display it on my wall wrapped around a NICE hide.

Haha it's funny you said that about the s hook opening I was worried as well. I didn't even notice it until I took that trap to power wash it (nobody freak out I didn't do it.) my buddy pointed out the trap in particular that came in a box I bought. We started looking it over and Noticed the other stuff, so I tossed it in the back seat and brought it home as it was.

Some of the ones I had had readable numbers on the jaws too but some of them you could just barely see and couldnt read very well.I figgered they were either serial nos. or casting nos.seems like they were only on gov.traps though.

I have a solid gray bobcat (weird huh) tanned for a full mount. I was planning on mounting him creeping along with one foot suspended over a partially exposed DLS. I've got some pretty cool traps but maybe I'll use this one for that... However at Jim's appraisal I could sell it and buy 5 more 3N users... And I think I like that better, lol.

I think I might have Misled you, It Was not one of those S hooks that opened up on me but I still dont trust them without welding them, any s hook. I would not bat an eye on fifty bucks for that one though,It would catch a lot of fur ,The Gov. bought the best ,and that one was a good one to have for predators.I allways wondered why they didn't put longer chains on them any how. haha I guess they did after all
