Do y'all put a lil grass or brush over a cage set for groundhogs?....but leave the end "see through".

I don't use any cover what so ever. I just box them in as clean as possible. I don't know if cover would help or hurt but I don't

seem to have any problems catching them the way I do it. ( Except for the ones that get run over by cars. I can't seem to catch them )

Sorry...I read the question wrong. Uncovered. I was thinking it might help covering the wire floor.

I am assuming you are using bait with single door cages? I think I used to cover single door cages when using bait many years ago to keep the sun off the bait and rain out.

However, having abondoned bait, I switched to positive and trail sets with double door traps. Using positive or trail sets with double door cages, at den sites along structure or in trails, I use a metal nose cone to direct animals into the trap at dens and protect animals from the weather. A metal cover can be used with bait, ready to use for baitless trapping too. With the solid if you end up with a "black and white" in a woodchuck den, you're good to go, just pick him up.

We always cover our traps for all species trapping for multiple reasons. Most are to protect the animal from exposure to elements and nosey folks. Covering also reduces lure/bait dryout. But most catches should be made long before the bait dries out if you are trapping on an active burrow.

Dave is right about covering the floor wire and I use 2-door cages without bait so I find covering unnecessary. I used to use

plasti-catch for woodchucks and they worked alright, just not as successful as the 2-door. I think sending a guy out to catch

woodchucks without my favorite 2-door cage, is just plain mean.

I always cover the bottom with dirt/sand......and I will brush them in to break up the outline of the trap a little bit if there's brush at the site. I don't go out of my way looking for brush but I do think there's a benefit to breaking up the outline a little. I feel it bcomes even more beneficial If they are using more than one den site. A few well placed sticks and weeds and it becomes just another brush pile for them. At the very least it hides the trap a little from possible thieves. This is all done with a double door trap.......I hate single door traps.
