Yotes put a hurting on my deer yard at camp last winter and time for revenge..not going to get time to trap till late November here in northern maine..just wondering what sets and scents work well in extremely cold weather..need a productive season..any thing helps

waxed dirt or similar at sets,,,, 4 coiled traps to bust out of frost/freeze.......

Waxed dirt is super, water beads off. It can rain, snow, freeze and the set keeps on ticking. Really neat to fire off a waxed dirt set after a rain and freeze, even while its raining and a puff of dust comes up as the trap fires perfectly. Even with inches of snow over the trap an animal can dig out a dirt hole and will get caught. When you use it for the first time you will love it. It's seems that after the rain the predators move after holding up during the storm. With standard sets its a crap shoot, might work, might not with the waxed the dirt. You can buy it or make it in the sun in summer.

I heard a story about old Josh Phoenix from downstate N.Y. After a cold spell below zero and a foot of snow, Josh had 8 cherry red foxes hanging. Josh would dig out his trap beds before the season and put the waxed dirt in place so that he could trap right through winter.

If you already have trapping experience then it should not be a problem catching. Its the elements that will be your worst problem to deal with.All sets can be productive if set up reasonably well and you have some good bait and lure to use on location.

I just finished about 20 buckets of waxed dirt mixed 50/50 with dry sifted peat. That is real foul weather material. I only use it when its bad. Early on it is just peat mixed with dry dirt, peat in the bed with some salt for the most part.Never have too much put up material to bed traps with as needed. Any serious trapper knows the value of trap cover when it gets wet and cold.
