Just wondering are Beavers intrested in castor mounds all year around. Our season starts in P.A. DEC 26 I mostly use blind sets. Just wondering if Flatails would be intested in the around that time.

Not a much of a beaver trapper by any stretch of the imagination, mostly cause we don't have many. 2 years ago I caught like 6 of my ten with caster mounds last year seemed to have trouble getting them to work em. Only caught 1 in a caster mound last year.

life is good......

Castor mounds are territorial markers. Anytime you place some unfamiliar castor in a beaver terr. they will investigate and try to place their castor on the mound. The trick is to be inside the beaver home area. Castor placed outside the home area has little chance of connecting except late season (march ro ice out) when the family units start to break down and the 1.5 year olds start to strike out on their own.
In short if your on location you can catch beaver at anytime with castor mounds

Castor mound sets not only are attractive to beaver otter will check them out and coon will really look them over. I have even had bobcats checking them out. Castor is a grat scent for just about every critter we trap for. So i wouldnt hessitate to use it at any time during the season but as dunkard trapper has stated it is most effective for beaver during the mating and separation of beaver families. But it is al;so a territorial thing. So if you can find the beaver areas where there are chewed sticks along the bank and signs of tree girdling. Then i would definatly stick a csator mound set in.

I have never trapped beaver , but my area is LOADED with chewin, tree girdle, and you can see where they are pushin leaves and mud out of the water up on the bank. If someone would not mind post a pic of a castor mound set. I would appreciate it.

The leaves and mud pushed up on the bank IS a castor mound. Mike, I use them from the first day to the last.

well its is not much of a "mound" then cause it is a handfull of leaves and mud. There is no smell whatso ever.
Not sayin you are wrong by no means, cuz I aint a beaver trapper.
I just thought there would have been a mound , hence the name castor mound.

Nope, that's a castor mound. Pull one apart and put a little water on it, you'll smell the castor in it. Some are scent mounds, some are castor mounds. Same-same though. Sometimes you see huge mounds, most of the time though they aren't much more than a couple handfulls of mud and leaves. It's a scentpost that the beaver uses to mark its' territory.

95% of my beaver are taken on castor mounds of my making.
I use them anytime I have open water--winter,spring or fall. They are as effective in the fall and winter, as they are in the spring.

Why do beaver swim right past a castor mound? I've set on a pull out an each side of a castor mound, use good castor lures and caught a beaver at each blind set and the castor mound missed. I catch more beaver at blind sets than castor mounds.

Look for the trails into the water!

Could it of been the natural approach mound? Sounds like a you-have-to-be-there-to-understand thing. Dont have many natural mounds here, they all get washed away so I make my own and usually have a flattail waiting the next day.

You dont have to move them. Make your own. Throw a few hand fulls of mud onto bank, make a light trail to it and set trap or snare. Here is a mound that I made, you cant see the mound it was small, I also used some sticks to make it look like beaver had been feeding. I made the trail, gathered mud and sticks, I like the idel of curiosity type lure at this type set. I used Beaver Plus and took beaver.

You can also make a channel the same width of 330 and throw small pile of mud into mound form at end of channel. Set the 330 in channel about half way under water or maybe a little more. Make sure this is legal in your area. Use a good lure and get knife sharp.
