and if so at what time of year is the best i know i have to pick site s exactly like it was already growing , the reason for movement is conservation. theft may be an issue.

yes, you most certainly can...........fall would be the best time because the tops are dying off anyway and it's illegal to dig wild seng any other time of the year.

but to be totally legal, i'd contact your dnr to see if transplanting is allowed.

Goldenseal will adapt to any decent spot in your woods. You don't have to duplicate the exact typ of setting it grew in. goldenseal is one of the best herbs there is to transplant. You can even cut the root into smaller pieces. Most usually 2 pieces works real good. Some say that anyplace there is an eye on the root, it can be cut into like 1 inch pieces to every eye.

I have some ginseng that I planted last year and now there are some rows with places where there are three to six or seven small plants nearly touching each other. I would guess these need separated. Is there any special procedure to follow?

Also, is there a source for buying golden seal roots for planting? If so, any idea of price?

Cut the tops off. Don't make any difference what color they are. If you get enough tops that you can dry out and save, I would give you 5.00 a pound for them. The tops m,ust be nice and green to sell dried out. They don't want yellow, brown or black tops when selling the leaves.

They need transplanted. Let them grow as long as you see a green top on the plants. Once the tops start turning yellow or brown, it is time to transplant the roots.
If you want to buy planting stock for goldenseal , this might be a good place to start asking for someone to sell you some. With the price of dry Goldenseal at 26.00 from me, I suspect that the roots should bring from $12 to $14 a pound green.
How many pounds do you want? If not to many, I might be able to dig some for you. You would have to pay shipping on the roots.

Been planting Goldeseal for weeks now. After I plant, I water, then sprinkle some powered lime on the dirt then cover with Oat straw.
