First off I been trapping for 40 years. Catch 100 +K-9 a year,200-300 coons a year. I know a little about trapping. One critter I don't know much about is the mole and I got a problem that's been going on for over a month. I have 4 different style of mole traps from spears to the out of sight type. I have always had good luck with the out of site traps but this mole I been trying to catch is really starting to get under my skin. He rarely leave travel tunnels just feed mounds and they are right in my front yard just out side the door. I have dug down and found tunnels and placed traps in them ,but I can't catch him. What type of trap and set should I use for this situation. I'm about ready to break out the Cat 320 excavator. I have even went to hunting him. Twice I have seen him pushing up the mounds and have slammed a 10" pick where I thought he was at only to come up empty handed. I'm loosing sleep because of this little sob. Please help.

I feel your pain! The county did some drainage work last spring behind my house, which sent every mole tunneling into my backyard. Long story short, I tried everything under the sun before I came across Traplineproducts.com. My problem was solved within 2 weeks after utilizing these traps. Good Luck!

First and foremost, trapping a mole is no different than trapping a fox. Location Location location for the trap. I have a saying that I have. There are a lot of places that some animals will go sometimes, But only a few places that all the animals go all the time. Moles are no different. That mole has a place where it starts from and goes to many places from there when ever. but there will be travel routes used to go to these many spots. Where you see all the, what I call squiggly wiggly trails or mounds all bunched up, that is feeders. where they find a load of worms mainly in my area and or grubs or other insects in a pocket. They hit that area and move on, spending time there from a few hours to a day then gone. I believe that as the mole is working the area eating the worms, many worms are beating feet and getting out of dodge LOL. Setting traps in these spots, which by the way is where most homeowners and new guys set, are, and only in my opinion, is a waste of traps and time. I look for the straight liners. The trails or mounds that go in a direction from a point to point. Maybe better put, from that one spot that always has sign to a point where there is a food source. flower bed out in the yard, from a sidewalk to a fence line. around the foundation, in other words travel routes. and set them, not feeders. For me I set 2 to 4 traps per job, I don't need more in my area as these straight liners are few compared to the feeders, and most of my jobs are done in 1 to 4 checks.

I struggled with moles bad. It wasn't until the late 80's when a gentleman by the name of Tim Wilks (if my memory serves me right,) (Paul May remember if that is the correct). He took me out in the front yard of a hotel where a wildlife conference was being held, and showed me where and how to set for these things. That next week at home, I started catching moles LOL

Also although I have heard about moles coming out of the ground, in my area the only type of mole that will come up out of the ground is a star nose and only because the tunnel is so shallow and wet that the tunnel just opens for 3 or 4 inches, my easterns do not come up and out. but the voles will open a hole in the tunnel system that the mole is not using anymore.

FINALLY!!!!!!! I finally got the sob. I gave up on trapping it after weeks of sprung and empty traps I decided to hunt him down and shoot him. This morning I was using a 22 and I don't know how but missed him when I seen him working the ground. This evening I broke out the S&W 38 snub nose and plugged him. I probably had a couple hours total waiting on him. I as happy as if it was a 165" B&C Whitetail.

The taxidermist is going to have a heck of a time patching him up. You might want to forget about the full body mount and go with a

head mount instead. ( I like to hang mine right between the jackalope and the sabor-toothed chipmunk )

Can you see the scene, Wink?

"...this here's a 38 caliber Smith and Wesson, and it'll blow your skin clean off. So you gotta ask yourself...'Do I feel lucky?'
Well, do ya, punk?!"

This one is a model 10-5, my wife packs it most of the time. I like my 686 357 S&W. I may break it out for a mole hunt. I found fresh diggings this morning behind the house this time.
