this is staghorn sumac

noooo, this isn't the poison kind

i'm almost certain most of us have seen this

some of use the berries to dye traps in,,,,,,,,,but right now...if you harvest the berries....you can make an awesome drink.

the medicinal part is actually the root bark.

your gonna need a spade because these are tree roots.........the root bark is peeled off, and dried........I dry it in the shade on screens then store in paper bags when dry.

Parts of smooth sumac have been used as an antiemetic, antidiarrheal, antihemorrhagic, blister treatment, cold remedy, emetic, mouthwash, asthma treatment, tuberculosis remedy, sore throat treatment, ear medicine, eye medicine, astringent, heart medicine, venereal aid, ulcer treatment, and to treat rashes

I let the berries sit in cold water for around 8 hours or so.....you'll have to experiment to see what fits your taste ........more berries means more tartness. I usually have a guesstimate of 3 cups of berries per gallon of water.

don't boil it because it will release wayyy to many of the tannins in it and make it bitter.

don't go harvest any after a hard rain either.......rain will wash all the flavor off.
