I just started knapping on glass. I do not have any flint or chert yet, need to find some. This is the first respectable point I have made.

I was wondering if anybody has and tips or techniques that work well and what places would be good to find flint/chert (I am in eastern SD by Big Sioux river and should be a fair amount of sedimentary rocks around). I would like to know more about platforms and flake directing if anybody has anything to offer as well. Thanks!

If this is in the wrong forum feel free to move. Figured it would fit best in wildcrafting.

I like your point. The glass is great looking. would that be to heavy to hunt with?

I don't think so. If anything it might be too light, but once you haft it to a shaft with pine tar and sinew it should be in the 75gr range I think, depending on how liberal you are with the tar. Just weighed it, the point is 28gr

That don't seem to be very heavy. I would have thought it would have weighed more, but I don't have any idea on how much that kinda thing might weigh. How heavy is a flint point?

All depends on the size. Most of my hunting sized points are in the 150 gr. plus weight range.

As new house said most large game hunting points are much heavier. I am restricted to glass bottle bottoms as I am only find small pieces of flint and nothing large due to the glacial till found here. I have a 10# chunk of pink chert but that is back home. I did find a large piece of solid quartz the other day a bit bigger than a softball I am going to try to knap. I have tried a smaller piece of quartz and it flaked good. So, I guess I will see how it comes out grin.

Check out a local knap in. Great place to pick up some flint. If you are feeling like a vacation Flint Ridge has their knap in Friday, August 29, 2014 to Sunday, August 31, 2014 here in Ohio. You can buy flint from tons of different vendors there and see flint outcroppings that will make you drool.

Also I have a 1/2 a five gallon bucket of flint ridge I am trying to sell right now. P.M. me if you are interested.

They are beautiful pieces. I don't think I'd have the patience to make them. They are alot nicer than the ones I find.
