everywhere there are ground hog holes. mulberry trees, dumpster sites. oh and the dog and cat food bowls left on the decks. had a call yesterday with one in a pool.

Going to find skunks just about anywhere!
Point is, you should be catching them where they are a problem!
Otherwise, why are you trying to catch them?
I could handle a skunk under the deck call, set traps 50' feet away in most places and catch a dozen of them.
Makes for a bigger pay check but it doesn't solve the original problem!

I don't know about New Mexico but you can trap them out in a hurry up here. They also have one of the poorest immune systems I've

seen. We have had them all but disappear from West Nile virus, then rabies, then distemper. They seem to have stabilized a little in

the last couple of years. I like skunks. Smart people will pay us to get one out of their trap. Dumb people usually turn into smart

people after the first try!

In the hot weather skunks around here hole up in culverts and old fox dens during the day.

Yep.

Around here, the ideal habitat contains plenty of lawn with brushy areas here and there. Plenty of bird feeders is a definite plus. The more decks and sheds the better. Cat/dog food is manna from the humans.

It takes a while around here but if I trap the same area year after year, which I have, I can come close to clearing them out.

I really like skunks. If you're gentle with them they are some of the most friendly wildlife around.

I think a lot of people would be amazed thinking they caught them all, and set up a camera only to find 1 or 2 that just will not go into a trap.

Also as I re read the article in the trappers post it stated I do not set out in the open. some have since asked me if I set in thick stuff, I don't set open cages in stuff that I can't get the tarp over. I set most of the time on the open side of a edge where they are walking.
