We began a goose program of Hazing a few weeks ago. Had an interesting scenario of watching a case of pilot error with a goose. Had a goose fly off as they do doing such a program. It flew away across a highway and flew right into some over head powerlines and dropped like a lead balloon. Never have witnessed such a situation in my days.

It sounded and looked as if someone shot the goose at it passed over the road and fell into a residences lawn. It was about 100 yards away when this occurred. Feathers flew and a large boom accompanined the strike. I thought to myself. WOW! What a great shot someone just made on that goose. That thought came across my mind. Another example of pilot error it seems.

Bob, apparently that happens more than we think. We've got a pond a couple of miles away that has a really good agitator that keeps it open all year and the waterfowl just love it.

The Wisconsin Electric company has hung flashers on the electrical lines next to this pond. I had never seen that before.

I remember once watching a two drake mallards chasing a hen. As she flew around one of the drakes hit one of those high voltage wire on those really tall towers. Dropped like a brick...dinner for me.

It was probably the hen trying to escape. Drake 1 was chasing her and Drake 2 was her mate and chasing him.

I've never seen one hit the lines. I wish it would happen to squirrels though.

Had that happen with us once.

The goose fell into the play area of a daycare. Fortunately no children were out when it happened. Not because of the trauma from seeing a bird fall from the sky, but the risk of being killed by a 15 pound hunk of meat hitting one of them!

It does, in a way. I've seen them fried on utility poles now and them. They contact the terminals ona transformer and you get sparks and smoke! They will regularly chew on house wiring in attics and start fires.

I watched a trumpeter do it one day. Very big flash and blew the transformer. Very interesting to see. I wouldn't think a goose would be large enough to hit 2 phases but I guess so.

I had a lineman tell me some years back that squirrels were the largest cause of power outages next to storms. Does that sound right?

I had it happen twice with geese. It looked like the forth of July. The goose was literally cooked, hard as a carp.

I'm not a lineman just a wireman, but I could believe squirrels could wreck havoc on transformers

I have seen a snow gooose sail in to a power line after being shot. When it hit the wire it took out the wing and it was over.
