This was one of the questions on my grandson's profile of his grandfather for a school assignment. I actually came up blank! In my grade school years I collected stamps and enough baseball cards to retire on. ( Who didn't? ) In my high school years I had hunting and trapping. After high school it was big game hunting in Alaska and wing-shooting several times in South Dakota and Canada.

Even after marriage, I took up reading every best seller, hunted, trapped, raised kids and English setters. Now I watch my grandkids and TV. Doesn't everybody my age do that?

I would like to hear from some of you guys on what you do outside of hunting, fishing, trapping, and ADC work. ( If you think that your answers won't be interesting, you would be wrong! )

P.S. If your hobby could get you in trouble with the Mrs. or the cops, PM me. I've been there.

Is there anything besides hunting, fishing, and trapping?
Besides making babies (I'm 51 and my youngest is 14 weeks old) I enjoy reading. I also do some volunteer stuff, NWTF, Fire Department, Game and Fish Department.

mtncat, the sports stuff tells us what you do, the volunteer stuff tells us who you are!

DaveK does not windsurf in Michigan. When you hear about those offshore bank accounts in the Caribbean, that would be Dave.

logger, making junk has been my life's work. Maybe that's the reason I spray painted for nearly 30 years; to cover up the junk.

Good off work topic Paul.
Like somebody said hunt-trap-fish, is there anything else? well yes, the only politically correct thing I do is garden and even then I us Roundup. I also like old Willys jeeps, currently working on a '57 CJ5, same vintage as me.
Go into 'trapper talk" on 3/12/14 and look for Charles Dobbins scholarship gun #2 and you'll see yours truly with his new rifle standing next to my Willys project. She's a barn find, spent 27 years in a barn, not a single rust through spot, barely any surface rust and all original drivetrain. she even has a PTO winch.

Wow! You're right Salys. Good topic. And great response. There is a lot more to you guys than meets the eye! ( Kind of makes you want to go up in Don's balloon while riding in Saly's Willys )

I found that Willys 50 miles from home heading for a skunk job 70 miles out. Mixed business with pleasure.

I have seen too many upside down baskets in my days so I learned to stay on the ground. smile

For hobbies, I do what I do every day. Hunt, fish, trap, ADC and make lures/baits. What else could a fella want to do.No time for any other hobbies at the moment.

Love landscaping, planting trees, bushes and flowers, putting in beds. Hate cutting grass. Of course trapping, hunting, fishing and camping.

Years ago an old timer I hung around with told me..."never trust a man who doesn't have a hobby". I didn't ask him why because that was the one question he would never answer. He'd look at me rather disgusted and say..."figure it out". LOL

So I've made sure I've always had a hobby or two.

Besides the usual hunting, fishing and trapping I have a good sized garden, love to cook, I cast bullets, reload and target shoot, white water canoe and play the guitar and banjo.

I hope old Gus would deem me trustworthy.

Other than the big three, I enjoy my garden, mushrooming, hanging with my family, woopin' it up with some good friends, Four wheeling. I used to be a scuba diver, but gave it up along with my boat. I was a Harley guy too! I guess there will be more hobbies in the future. I am just one of those guys that has to try everything!

Back in the day I played fastpitch softball for about 20 years and played a lot of golf and did a.d.c. for fun. Then I started my business and now.....I work. Man, I need to get a life!

Sometimes work can be too much fun not to call it a hobby. Other than that, hunting tournament fishing, cooking, canning veggies and having fun with friends and family

The big 3 of course, but also go 'shroomin, shed hunting, but my major and expensive hobby is collecting old, rare or 1st edition hunting, adventure, exploration, and anything outdoorsy books.

I got 100's upon 100's on anything you can think og from the 1860's on

HMMMM Im not sure if I have anything other than hobbies. If you make money at it, is it still a hobby???

It seems as the seasons change so do the seasons. I seem to over fill my days with nothing but the top 3, then Im reading about them, I am always looking for new knowledge, and I am always trying to test and prove what I hypothesis... Im really into the whole photo periodism theory`s. Not just for deer, considering I am in the ADC line of work. As the amount of daylight lengthens and shortens I like to check ambient air temps, and water temps, as well investigate the foliage develop.

During the summer the other thing I love to do is play softball. Once Im part of a team and I commit, that comes before my leisure activities, if I can even call it that. i guess I am a little to curious. I find myself way to involved. Im trying to focus more so this year on staying a bit more grounded. Like I said Im over booked. I have hounds and a pitbull who love to hunt. They are mine, so I am committed.

Anyway< I guess what this is all about is my love for the outdoors, and wildlife and what ma nature has to offer. A simple walk in the woods for me turns out to be a lot more than that. tracking wildlife and observing nature seems to be just set in my DNA. It seems that its not who I am, but what I am...

I enjoy listening to my hounds chase a bear or a coon as well as trout fishing but A couple years back took up metal detecting and really enjoy finding pieces from the past. Most arent worth much but makes me happy just to find them.

WILDCHILD, I get the impression that nearly all of us were born in the Garden of Eden which is probably why I asked the question.

My son seems to have found the proper balance. As the leader of our company, he puts a lot of hours into ADC work but like you, he also makes time for sports. He also plays softball and this year he got a team together and played church league basketball. He played in the championship game at a local college on Sunday and won. All fifteen members of our family were there to support him. Supper cost me the equivalent of a service call and two raccoon!

I am really happy with the response to this question. Thanks a lot guys and keep them coming.
